Two ways exist to create energy from waste: 1. via Biogas 2. via Incineration Biogas production is currently being done at a landfill (Magħtab) and a Waste Treatment Plant (Sant’Antnin) while incineration is being planned for a new incineration plant in Marsa.

Energy from Waste Biogas production results from chemical reactions and bacteria acting upon waste as it begins to decompose. This gas is then sent to a generator to produce electricity. Incineration involves burning of waste to generate steam which is then used to turn generators and produce electricity.

Biodiesel is available on the market through one private company. Biodiesel is a clean fuel, produced from domestic resources. It contains no petroleum but is blended with diesel and can be used in diesel engines with few modifications. Biodiesel is available on the market through one private company.

Biodiesel This company uses recycled waste cooking oil collected mainly from hotels but also from houses.
