Sexually Transmitted Infections STI’s or STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

What are STI’s? Bacteria or Viruses that are transmitted through sexual contact (not just intercourse) or the exchange of bodily fluids. What are bodily fluids? Examples of STIs: Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, HIV/AIDS, Herpes, Syphilis, PID, HPV

Gonorrhea Anyone who is sexually active can get gonorrhea. In the United States, the highest reported rates of infection are among sexually active teenagers and young adults.

Symptoms of Gon. Symptoms in Men –Some have none at all –Burning sensation when urinating –White, yellow, or green discharge from penis –Painful or swollen testicles Symptoms in Women –Most have none at all –Burning sensation when urinating –Increased vaginal discharge –Bleeding between periods

Various locations on either gender

Gonorrhea cont’d If they occur, symptoms in men and women vary depending on what part of the body is infected: Gonorrhea can affect the anus, eyes, mouth, genitals, or throat. This disease can impact a woman’s ability to have children if left untreated.

GOOD NEWS! Gonorrhea can be treated. –It is caused by a BACTERIA, so it can be treated and cured with antibiotics.

Chlamydia Chlamydia is a bacterial infection which is an infection caused by the germ Chlamydia trachomatis, that usually infects the genitals of both men and women, but can also infect the throat, rectum and eyes. Chlamydia is one of the most common STD's - and because more than 50% who have chlamydia have no symptoms at all - chlamydia infection usually goes untreated.

Chlamydia found in both male and female

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) Genital warts Warts are the most frequent sexually transmitted infection and are hugely contagious. The only indication that a person has genital HPV is the outbreak of genital warts.

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) Genital Warts

Herpes Genital herpes is a common STD, and most people with genital herpes infection do not know they have it. You can get genital herpes even if your partner shows no signs of the infection. If you have any symptoms (like a sore on your genitals, especially one that periodically recurs) laboratory tests can help determine if you have genital herpes. Caused by a virus so there is no cure for herpes, but treatment is available to reduce symptoms and decrease the risk of transmission to a partner.

Syphilis Syphilis caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It has often been called "the great imitator" because so many of the signs and symptoms are indistinguishable from those of other diseases.Syphilis How common is syphilis? In the United States, health officials reported over 36,000 cases of syphilis in 2006, including 9,756 cases of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis. In 2006, half of all P&S syphilis cases were reported from 20 counties and 2 cities; and most P&S syphilis cases occurred in persons 20 to 39 years of age.

Syphilis Found in men women and babies born to infected women

HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus which can lead to Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome

There is No Cure! This is caused by a VIRUS. Which means there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. So PREVENTION is very important.

How to prevent catching HIV HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids. –Sexual intercourse, sharing needles, tatoos blood transfusions (extremely rare) So don’t share fluids!

Preventable Abstinance Condoms
