ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 MYP – Personal Project ASM Library EBSCO databases

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Learning goals How to log in Interfaces and Databases Basic Search Limiters; Full Text Select articles

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 What is a database? Databases (DB) are large files that allow users to search, sort and filter information. Examples: ASM Directory, ASM Library Catalog EBSCO DBs What information can I find in a DB? Depending on the scope of the DB: Scholarly Journal articles Popular magazine articles Book chapters Images, videos, photographs Conference papers

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09

Databases and Interfaces Databases (DB) DDDDDDDD Interfaces “sit” between you and the databases. We communicate with the databases through the interfaces. Multiple DBs are searched. IIII

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 How to access EBSCO? SAVE THIS INFORMATION User ID:s Password:password GO to the LIBRARY HOMEPAGE LOOK for ‘EBSCO DATABASES’ and link ‘SEARCH EBSCO’

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Save in a Word file: User ID:s Password:password At School Or At Home

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Choose Interface Two main interfaces: Student Research Center EBSCOhost Web The other links are DBs extracted from the interfaces for searching exclusively those DBs. Note: you can search Literary Center from Ebscohost or use its own interface. Same with Points of View.

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Find a definition or get Background information Browsing Choose Sources

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Ebscohost By default all terms entered are used together with AND To select Full Text articles To limit by date For Peer-review

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Interfaces Student Research Center Less databases No control for DB Can choose Source Easier search Ebscohost More databases Can choose DB More advanced search

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Planning - this is an example of initial steps in research My interest: diabetes, learning about Personal reason: diabetes runs in my family Check AOI: falls into ‘health and social education’ Supervisor Personal Statement Product: educational flyer + public presentation Research question: Can diabetes be prevented? How?

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Exercise: Search term:diabetes prevention Limit: magazines only Limit: 2008 to 2009 Limit: Full Text Select articles and add them to folder Save, articles Narrow your Search: diabetes prevention adolescen* Note: * indicates that we are searching for variant endings such as ‘adolescent’, ‘adolescents’, ‘adolescence’. Not all articles used the same terminology so by using this strategy we can retrieve more articles about the same topic.

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 Searching Strategies Use synonyms Use truncation (* is used for variant endings) Scan titles and Select potential articles As you read, write down more questions Read abstracts to filter articles Collect all citations Build a vocabulary list (subject specific words) Subject Headings: on the left hand side of the results page you’ll see ‘Subject’. When articles are indexed they are assigned standardized words or phrases that best describe their topic or what is the article about. Several subject headings can be assigned to improve retrieval. By choosing a subject heading, you can narrow your search. You are now searching within that specific subject heading.

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 MLA The you received will have a link to the articles ‘Permalink’

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 You can set up your personal folder; articles will be saved for future visits. Your personal is accesible from both interfaces. Remember your User name and password; and, to sign in when you want to access your folder.

ASMLibrary-MYP-9/18/09 The END Please do not forget to Sign Out
