Brainwave 3 Unit 2

LAB P14 B CD12 Many discoveries and inventions are made in unusual ways. Over 300 years ago, a famous scientist called Isaac Newton discovered something very important. He was sitting in his garden. An apple fell from a tree. He wanted to know why the apple didn’t fall off planet Earth and go into space. Why did it fall down? Why did people stay on Earth? Why didn’t people just fall off Earth? He discovered gravity.

SB P17 The Aztec calendar stone was made in about It shows 360 days every year and is very similar to our calendar.

SB P17 The adding machine was made in about It helped people do sums more quickly.

The pendulum clock always takes the same time to swing from one side to another. It helped people measure time. The machine was designed in 1637 by Galileo. The first working pendulum clock was made by Christian Huygens in 1642.

The telegraph machine helped people to send messages over long distances. The messages were called telegrams. This is a five-needle telegraph. It was invented in 1923 by William Fothergill Cooke and Professor Charles Wheatstone.

The tea-making machine was invented in 1935 by Frank Clarke. The machine heated the water and poured it into a pot. At the same time, an alarm sounded to wake you up!

The flying machine was invented around Inventors began to explore the problems of controlling the machines to take off and land. They made thousands of experimental flights.

LAB P 14 D

Facts about machines Machines help us to work and play. There are a few basic (simple) machines. All other machines contain (have) some of these basic (simple) machines.

What is a basic (simple) machine or tool?

screw

Look for the screws in your desk and chair! How many can you find?

wheel and axle

What kind of machines contain a wheel and axle?

1. A tricycle (is a machine that) helps us move around. 2. A skateboard (is a machine that) helps us move around.

lever 0:15-0:26

A seesaw (is a machine that) lifts us up and puts us down.

inclined plane

What shape is an inclined plane? How can inclined planes help us?

A slide (is a machine that) helps us climb up and slide down.

wedge

A shovel (is somthing that) pushes things apart. A rake (is something that) pushes things apart.

pulley

A flagpole (is a machine that) moves the flag up and down.

What kind of machines and simple machines do you see? 1:23-2:13 3:37-4:00
