Common Core Expectations Essential Question: How do we resolve conflict? Reading Claim : Students can read closely and analytically to comprehend a range of complex literary texts. Target 3: Word Meaning: Determine intended meaning of words, including distinguishing connotation-denotation and words with multiple meanings. RL9.4 – Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text… analyze the impact of specific words on meaning and tone. Content objective – SWBAT display knowledge of short story vocabulary through written and oral expression. Language objective – SWBAT Correctly identify the classmate holding the correct term or definition and verbally share the vocabulary with the class.

Week 2 Vocabulary I will hand half of the class a 3x5 card with a vocabulary term, the other half of the class will receive a 3x5 card with the definition. Find the person who has the match to your term or definition. Prepare to share your word and definition to the rest of the class as we read.

Copy each of this week’s vocabulary terms and definition into your spiral notebook. TOC “3. Week 2 Vocabulary” 8/17/15 Narrative: a story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious. Character: a person or an animal that takes part in the action of a literary work. Plot: the sequence of events in a literary work. In most novels, dramas, short stories, and narrative poems. Setting: the surroundings or environment of anything. Time and place a story happens.

“The Interlopers” Assessment You will be handed a ten questions select response assessment and you will need to respond to this writing prompt. Writing Prompt: In “The Interlopers,” a violent storm causes a tree to fall on longtime enemies Georg and Ulrich. As a result, the men are caught beneath the tree and fear that their lives are in serious danger. How does this situation cause the men to rethink life and their bitter feud, and why is the change in their outlook ironic? What further ironic twist occurs at the end of the story?
