Wednesday Warm up What does the amplitude of a wave tell us as far as sound is concerned? What does the wavelength tell us as far as sound is concerned? What is a major difference between electromagnetic waves and sound waves?

Draw and identify the parts of the wave at: point B, point D, from the straight line to point B, and from points B-F

Draw 2 transverse waves side by side to compare and contrast the following: A sound that is VERY LOUD, but low pitched. A sound that is VERY LOUD, but high pitched.

Draw 2 transverse waves side by side to compare and contrast the following: A sound that is quiet and low pitched A sound that is quiet and high pitched

Waves are characterized by: 1. The way they move Transverse –Example: jump rope –Displacement is at a 90 degree angle Longitudinal –Example: slinky –parallel

Examples of transverse waves are: light waves, all the electromagnetic spectrum, audience waves, magnetic waves, surface waves, S earthquake waves, ultraviolet waves, heat

Waves moving through solids and liquids can be transverse OR longitudinal Waves carry energy from one point to another.

Waves that move through gases are:

Examples of longitudinal waves are: sound waves, tsunami waves, earthquake P waves, ultra sounds, vibrations in gas, and oscillations in spring, internal water waves, and waves in slinky

Waves are also classified based on whether or not they can: 2. Travel through empty space

Electromagnetic waves CAN travel through empty space! An electromagnetic wave is a wave that is capable of transmitting its energy through a vacuum (i.e., empty space). Electromagnetic waves are produced by the vibration of charged particles. Electromagnetic waves that are produced on the sun subsequently travel to Earth through the vacuum of outer space. Were it not for the ability of electromagnetic waves to travel to through a vacuum, there would undoubtedly be no life on Earth.

Mechanical Waves CANNOT!!! A mechanical wave is a wave that is not capable of transmitting its energy through a vacuum. Mechanical waves require a medium in order to transport their energy from one location to another. A sound wave is an example of a mechanical wave. Sound waves are incapable of traveling through a vacuum. Slinky waves, water waves, stadium waves, and jump rope waves are other examples of mechanical waves; each requires some medium in order to exist. A slinky wave requires the coils of the slinky; a water wave requires water; a stadium wave requires fans in a stadium; and a jump rope wave requires a jump rope.jump rope waves

Displacement is given the letter x and is the distance between a point on a wave and the line of zero disturbance (i.e. the line at which there is no vibration) Amplitude is given the letter a, it is the maximum displacement - the highest point of the wave. Wave length is given the symbol (lambda) and is the distance between two similar points on a wave.

Frequency is given the letter f and is the number of cycle made in a second. It is measured in Hertz (Hz) Time period is the given the letter T and is the time taken for one complete cycle of the wave - the time from one peak to another
