Lesson 4: The Plentiful Sea Water is a big part of the Northeast. We rely on the water for FUN, food, and even transportation. We have many important bays in the northeast. A bay is a part of the sea or lake that cuts into the coastline. Inlets are like bays, but smaller.
Great Shellfish Bay: Chesapeake Bay Chesapeake Bay in Maryland is rich in seafood including oysters, crabs, and clams. The people who fish the bay are called Watermen. These men and women gather different kinds of seafood during different seasons. Watermen use crab pots to catch crabs. A crab pot isn’t really a pot at all- it is a large wire cage with several sections. The crabs crawl in, but can’t crawl out.
Challenges to the Chesapeake Bay Over fishing challenges the balance of life in the bay. Overfishing means taking more fish and seafood faster than natural processes can replace them People are trying to stop pollution and overfishing. One organization, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, is working to educate people about the environment. Their slogan is “Save the Bay!” Water pollution: Some factories would dump chemicals into the Bay. This would kill wildlife and plants.
Delaware Bay North of Chesapeake Bay is Delaware Bay. It forms the border between New jersey and Delaware. Oyster Fishing is popular in this Bay.
Massachusetts Bay Farther north still is Massachusetts Bay. It is near the city of Boston. Cape Cod Bay is in the pirate’s hook we use to identify Massachusetts. AAARRRGGG! The cape has been a safe haven for ships against the harsh storms of the northeast for centuries. Many people vacation here.
The Northeast The Northeast can be subdivided into two smaller regions: New England: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Mid-Atlantic States: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland
