“CITUS ET CERTUS” Basis for Classification Classification takes into account: A positions level of difficulty The mission of the organization The relationship to other positions or organizational levels

“CITUS ET CERTUS” Classification Considerations A position’s classification is based on work that: Is performed on a regular and frequent basis Is crucial to the position’s primary purpose Governs the position’s primary qualifications i.e. knowledge, skills, & abilities A position’s classification cannot be based on work that is assigned temporarily and/or strictly for training or career development purposes unless the position is in Pay Band 1 of Pay Schedule YA, YD, YH, or YK Classification is based upon the duties assigned to the position NOT the person!

“CITUS ET CERTUS” Mixed Positions The position is classified in the occupation and pay band that best reflect the position’s purpose. Where work falls within more than one pay schedule and/or pay band, the position is classified in the highest applicable pay schedule and pay band. Supervisory positions that also include nonsupervisory work are classified in the pay schedule and pay band with the highest rate range. If a specific occupation is not appropriate, the position may be classified in the general "01" occupation, if appropriate, in the occupation’s pay schedule and pay band.
