Lab Safety For numbers1-8, while watching the PowerPoint write the rules below the correct symbols. For Skill Challenge 1-4: Identify the safety rule not being followed.

Practicing Lab Safety 1. Be careful when working with poisons or toxic substances.

Practicing Lab Safety 2. Use care when working with acids and bases. CorrosiveFumes

Lab Safety 3. Wear Lab aprons when working with any substance.

Lab Safety 4. Do not use electrical cords with frayed ends. Do not let cords cross in front of work areas.

Lab Safety 5. Always wash your hands with soap and water.

Lab Safety 6. Wear safety goggles, especially when working with an open flame or chemicals.

Lab Safety 7. Do not use glass that is chipped or metal objects with broken edges.

Lab Safety 8. Confine loose clothing and hair when working with an open flame. Never reach across an open flame. Open Flame

Lab Safety 1. Jodi notices that the glass test tube she is using has a crack in it. She decides to use the test tube anyway since there are no available test tubes in the lab.

Lab Safety 2. Niko and Sandy decided to leave their lab materials and unused chemicals out on the desk overnight so they would be ready for the next day’s lab.

Lab Safety 3. As Lee heated a solution in a test tube, she looked into the test tube without goggles to observe what was happening. Her hair almost caught on fire.

Lab Safety 4. Michael was dissecting a frog without wearing gloves. The end-of-class bell suddenly rang. Michael grabbed his books and rushed to his next class.

Skill Challenge Maria and Jack are conducting an experiment in which they use acids and bases. Before putting on his safety goggles, Jack measures out a quantity of an acid in one beaker and a quantity of a base in another beaker. Maria smells the contents of the two beakers and notices that a strand of her long hair has fallen into one of the beakers.

Skill Challenge She dries her hair on a paper towel. Next, the two students mix the contents of the beakers together without reading the instructions. When the chemicals start to react, Jack and Maria pour the contents of the beaker down the sink drain and return to their desks.

Skill Challenge Rules Broken (there are 5)

Skill Challenge Elizabeth and Michael are using chemicals to determine which nutrients are present in certain foods. The lab is crowded, so they decide to work in the classroom instead. Before beginning the experiment, Elizabeth smells all of the chemicals. Michael pours the chemicals into a chipped test tube. They start the experiment, and then begin to read the instructions.

Skill Challenge After they finish the experiment, they throw the food and the chemicals in the classroom garbage can. Because there is no running water in the classroom, Elizabeth and Michael do not wash their hands.
