Hyperbole Extreme exaggeration

Hyperbole is a figure of speech which is an exaggeration - an extreme way of saying something. Examples: "I nearly died laughing." "I tried a thousand times." “I have a mountain of homework.”

Hyperbole A hyperbole is a type of figurative language. Example: “His feet were as big as a barge.” It looks like a simile; and is both because it fits the criteria of simile and hyperbole. It is comparing foot size to the size of a barge. A hyperbole is comparing something “normal” to something really big or extreme.

My sister wears so much makeup that… "when she takes it off, my mom doesn't recognize her." "she has to use a sandblaster to get it off at night." "when she smiles, cracks the size of the Grand Canyon form in the surface." "by the time she gets it all on, it's time to take it off!" "she weighs 50 pounds more when she's done!" "at night she has to get the paint scraper to take it off." "she could pass as a clown at the circus." "you could scrape off just the outer layer and put it on five other girls."

My teacher is so old… "she showed us a yearbook from 1500 B.C.!" "she can't even remember her own name!" "she claims that she invented the question mark!“

My dog is so ugly… "we have to pay people to pet it" "fleas won't even live on him!" " we have to wait 'till midnight to take him on walks." "he only has cat friends!"

Hyperbole or not? She moves like water. The man eats so much they had to lock the door when he came to McDonald’s My tongue is a ship; it goes where it will. The boy was so happy that his smile broke glass

Hyperbole or not? Mr. Smith is so skinny he has to run around in the shower to get wet. Ashley is as skinny as a pole. Ms. Caister is so boring the desks fall asleep!

Now time for… IDENPENDENT PRACTICE!
