Point of View

Every story has a point of view. To determine the story ’ s point of view, you need to determine the narrator of the story.

We are going to review three types of point of view.

First Person Third Person Limited Third Person Omniscient

First Person I looked at the new school and turned to see my little sister. Andrea ’ s face told me that she was as nervous as I was about starting this new school. Third Person Limited Sally was nervous as she looked at the new school. She turned to look at her sister and Andrea ’ s face told her that she was nervous as well. Third Person Omniscient Sally and Andrea looked at the new school and both felt nervous about starting the new school.

Determine the point of view on the following passages.

1. I ’ m on to something. Working day and night. I ’ ve had a cot moved into the lab. Most of my writing time is spent on the notes which I keep in a separate folder, but from time to time I feel it necessary to put down my moods and my thoughts out of sheer habit.

2. “ It isn ’ t very often I have the pleasure of taking in visitors. ” The old girl is slightly crazy, Billy told himself. However, Billy decided to stay at the landlady ’ s bed and breakfast because the price was so cheat.

3. Many long years ago, there lived an arrogant and cruel young lord who ruled over a small village in the western hills of Japan. The young ruler thought he was the smartest ruler in the country. However, the people in his village thought he was mean and wished that he would no longer be there ruler.
