Checking a Conscious Person  For a conscious person with no immediate life- threatening conditions:  Interview person and bystanders  Check the person from head to toe

Conducting Interviews  Ask…  What happened?  Do you feel pain/discomfort anywhere?  Do you have any allergies?  Do you have any medical conditions or are you taking any medication?  When did you last eat or drink?

Checking from Head to Toe  Do not move if you suspect head, neck, or back injury  Check person’s head and face  Look for cuts, bruises, bumps, or depressions  Monitor consciousness  Look for changes in the person’s breathing

Checking from Head to Toe  Notice how the skin looks and feels  Look over the body. Ask again about any areas that hurt  Shrug shoulders, take deep breath  Move fingers, hands, and arms  Move toes, feet, and legs  Look for a medical ID tag or bracelet

Checking an Unconscious Person  Always check an unconscious person for…  Open airway  Signs of life  Severe bleeding  Check the ABCs-  Airway  Breathing  Circulation

Airway  To open the airway:  Head tilt/chin-lift

Breathing o Look, listen, and feel for breathing for no more than 10 seconds o If not breathing, give 2 rescue o breaths for a child or infant. o If person is breathing, maintain an open airway through the head-tilt/chin-lift

Circulation  If an adult has no signs of life, you must assume the problem is a cardiac emergency and begin CPR immediately

Severe Bleeding  Check for severe bleeding by looking over person’s body from head to toe  Look for blood-soaked clothing or blood spurting from a wound

Recovery Position See pgs.22-23

Shock  Shock- Circulatory system fails to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the body’s tissues and vital organs  Traumatic Shock: injury related shock.

Treatment Objectives 1. Improve Circulation 2. Maintain an Adequate Supply of Oxygen 3. Maintain Normal Body Temperature.

Signals of Shock Restlessness or irritability Altered level of consciousness Nausea or vomiting Pale, ashen, cool, moist skin Rapid breathing and pulse Excessive thirst

Caring for Shock  Call 911  Have the person lie down  Control any bleeding  Elevate person’s legs about 12 inches  Help person maintain normal body temperature  Do not give person anything to eat or drink  Reassure person  Continue to monitor person’s ABCs
