Credibility of Character Lob’s Girl Credibility of Character

Lob’s Girl (Flow Chart) On the beach when Sandy was five, a dog came to her and started licking her face. Sandy played with Lob at the beach. Lob belongs to Mr. Dodsworth who lives in Liverpool 400 miles away.

Sandy and her family live in Cornwall. Lob came to the Pengelly’s house and knocked over the Christmas puddings. The Pengelly’s took Lob back to Don Dodsworth at “Fisherman’s Arms.” When Lob and Mr. Dodsworth take the train back, Sandy goes down to the train stations to see Lob off secretly.

A week later, Lob walks 400 miles to get back to the Pengelly home. Mr. Dodsworth takes a train to pick up Lob. In ten days, Lob came back to the Pengelly home. Bert Pengelly calls Mr. Dodsworth to pick up the dog.

Mr. Dodsworth gives the dog to the Pengelly’s. Nine years go by and Mr. Dodworth would visit Lob at the Pengelly’s house. Jean Pengelly asks Sandy to visit her Aunt Rebecca. Sandy takes Lob with her and walks down to Aunt Rebecca’s house.

Dr. Traverse finds Sandy’s body. He realizes that she was hit by a car. Sandy is taken to the hospital. The doctors are unsure if she will make it. Sandy’s grandmother, Granny Pearce finds Lob outside the hospital and gets permission for Lob to come to the window. Sandy hears the sound of a dog and begins to move.

Grandma Pearce is upset with Sandy’s parents for not allowing Lob to the room sooner to see Sandy. Sandy’s parents tell Grandma Pearce that the dog is not Lob. Lob was killed during the accident. Lob’s body had been buried at sea.

Response to Literature Credibility of Character Credibility of characterization refers to the author’s presentation of a character through believable thoughts, actions, and words. A character’s credibility can also depend on interactions with other characters in the story. Critiquing credibility means determining whether or not a character seems realistic or believable.

The Short Constructed Response (SCR) & Extended Constructed Response (ECR)

The SCR & ECR SET-UP Make a reasonable assertion that critiques the credibility of the main character’s characterization in the passage. Include evidence that supports your assertion that shows that the character does things that are credible or are not credible. Identify three examples from the passage and explain in your own words why that behavior is or is not credible.

An Assertion An assertion (statement or opinion) must take the position that the main character does things that either are or are not credible. An assertion that is used in an essay is commonly referred to as the thesis statement. Example-Sandy is a credible character because she has a close relationship with her dog named Lob.

Directions for the ECR Write a multiple-paragraph response (essay) that critiques the credibility of Sandy’s characterization. Provide details from the passage and explain how they support your interpretation. (Tree Map)

Credibility of Character for Sandy from “Lob’s Girl”

Credible actions Textual Evidence (Citation or Paraphrase) “The next day was Saturday…She didn’t want to be seen, but she wanted to see. She saw Mr. Dodsworth get on the train, accompanied by an unhappy looking Lob with drooping ears and tail.” Explanation (In your own words) Sandy is a credible character because her actions reveal that she cares about Lob and wants to see him one more time. The author has created a character who seems believable to the reader.

Credible thoughts Textual Evidence (Citation or Paraphrase) Explanation (In your own words)

Credible interactions with others Textual Evidence (Citation or Paraphrase) Explanation (In your own words)
