Mgr. Simona Sikorová Znojmo Writing Review

There are three parts of a review 1. Introduction - one paragraph 2. Main part – 2-3 paragraphs 3. Conclusion – one paragraph

Introduction Write basic information about the topic of your review e.g.: - the title - the author´s name - the genre - awards he/he has won „ Inside Man is a thriller, which is perhaps surprising from Spike Lee, a director known for more serious films. However, this first attempt at cinema as entertainment is a great success, and an attentive viewer will also discover in it a wealth of cultural background.“

Main part- first paragraph First paragraph - short plot summary written in the present simple Don´t mention the entire plot with ending because it makes the review boring. „The movie tells the story of a bank robbery. Masked attackers hold up a bank on Manhattan, taking all the staff and customer hostage. Detective keith Frazier, brilliatnly played by Denzel Wahington, negotiates with the robbers, while at the same time trying to work out what they are relly up to. The director guides us through a maze of confusing clues to a suprise ending.“

Main part – second paragraph Second paragraph - analyse and judge the plot, the characters, the acting, the directing and the moral dimension „ The film is exciting, with fast action and many unexpected twists and turns. Denzel Washington gives a spectacular performance, as do Clive Owen as the leader of the gang and all of the supporting cast.“

Main part – third paragraph Third paragraph - cultural content - you can write some information about the place where the story is taken about nationalities, races, languages... „But in addtition to being a first-rate thriller, the movie offers a picture of life in New York. Apart from beautiful shots of Manhattan, the viewer sees a gallery of minor characters of many races, nationalities and languages. Their interactions, wheather marked by prejudice, resement, tolerance or friendship, give a real sense of both the tension and the richness of life in the most cosmopolitan city on Earth.“ _____________________________________________________ ____ Use vocabulary appropriate to the art you are writing about, for example – first-rate thriller, the movie tells the story of …, a director, the author, the story is set, the tale is gripping, the characters etc.

Style More or less formal It depends on the readers you are writing for Use vocabulary appropriate to the art you are writing about
