Agenda 3/8/2014  Do Now- (5 Minutes)  Activity #1- Corner (10 Minutes)  Activity #2- Review Packet (15 Minutes)  Writing Applications (10 minutes- Notes)  Activity #3- Biographical Essay (35 minutes)

Activity #1(10 mins)  In pairs, students will read the Corner  Underline the figurative language, place a letter by the FL S- Simile M-Metaphor P- Personification O- Onomatopoeia  Answer the question on the back page  Prepare to share with the class

Activity #2 (15 mins)  Students will individually complete a review packet on pages 7-11  After completing the packet, students should share their responses with a partner  Plan on sharing with the class

Writing Applications  You will be expected to complete one essay:  Biographical  Response to Literature  Expository  Persuasive  Business Letter

Biographical Essays  Writing about a real person who is important to you  Why this person is important to you  Why you feel about this person the way you do  Good Place to start is with a CHART!  You should remember this from Ms. Reynoso’s class

Example of Chart TraitStory IntelligentStory about middle school, photographic memory, read the dictionary in it’s entirety (twice). LovingWould do anything for us. Story of when they bailed you out of a tough situation. FunnyGreat story teller, told funny jokes, liked to play games and prank people

Should Include  Why the person is important and give examples  Be specific  Include sensory details: sights, sounds, and smells  Try to make the reader see the person. What does she/he look like? What does he do?

Response To Literature  Must be able to identify the main idea and what the author is saying.  Must be able support ideas with the text evidence (quotes and examples).  Be aware of author’s stylistic devices (figurative language)  Identify and write about perceived ambiguities ( did the author make you question something).

Exposition  Type of writing that explains, gives information, or clarifies an idea.  Most common form of writing  Deals with real people, things, events, and places.

Exposition…  Should do:  Gather evidence in support of your subject  Use primary sources (first-hand) sources and secondary sources (newspapers) accurately  Be able to use visual aids- charts, maps, graphs, technology  Be aware f your audience  Use subject specific terms accurately

Persuasive Essays  You are trying to convince the reader  Involve a hook  Opinion based  Make sure your opinions are clear and understandable  Include arguments of those who disagree with you- explain why your arguments are stronger

Business Letters  Purpose can be to inform, suggest, complain argue, persuade, or to command  Begin with a salutation (Dear, To Whom it..)  Know your audience  Choose words wisely  Provide signature at the end of the letter

Activity 3  Students will work individually on a Biographical Essay  Write in your journals

Steps to GREAT essay writing: 1) Read Prompt 2) Brainstorm/ Outline 3) Write 4) Re-read and Edit

Biographical Essay Prompt There have been many different experiences and events that have shaped you. Choose three events from your past that have changed or influenced who you are and write about the event’s details. Show how these events were important to making your life different(siblings birth, moving, accidents, deaths, friends)

Brainstorm/ Outline  Thinking Map Examples
