The Commercial North 3.3 Notes Power Point Version

Big Ideas MAIN IDEA: The Northern colonies developed a predominately urban society, based on commerce and trade. WHY IT MATTERS NOW: The states that were once the Norther colonies remain predominately urban today.

Commerce in the North Farmers typically grew several crops, such as wheat, corn, and different live stock The growing seasons were shorter due to weather and soil conditions The north was home to many cities such as New York, Philadelphia, and Boston

A Diverse Society The North attracted even more immigrants then the South; this was largely due to the early diverse and tolerant settlements. This included free Africans. Slavery was less common in the North because farming styles were different. Prejudice was still a major issue.

Women in the North Extensive work responsibilities and little rights Only single women or widows could own land or run a business The Salem Witch Trials are an example of how women struggled with their limited roles in society

Enlightenment Growth of ideas using the scientific method and better understandings of nature Nicolaus Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, Sir Issac Newton Literacy increased throughout England and the colonies Benjamin Franklin was an Enlightenment thinker who had a large impact on the development of America Thomas Jefferson and Natural Rights

Great Awakening During the loss of Puritan control religion declined in the colonies Jonathan Edwards of Massachusetts was a clergy member who sought to revive the Puritan vision This lead to the development of traveling preacher who helped to revive religious feelings thought the nation Many colonists, Native, and African Americans converted to Christianity
