Presentation transcript:

Overview of Pre- registration programme for year 2 and 3

A reminder of the pathways BSc.(Hons) Nursing ( 3 years) BSc.(Hons) European Nursing (3 years but 6 months in year 3 abroad) Post-graduate Diploma in Nursing (2 years taught as students have a Degree and healthcare experience) All pathways based on the NMC Standards for Pre- registration Nursing Education (NMC 2010) Please note – We also have the September 2010 cohort (Dip Advanced and BSc undertaking their final placement)

Practice experiences in year 2 Adult and Child field students have 4 rotations in Y2. 3 rotations (5/6 weeks) are summative and 1 is formative / experiential. There are 3 summative assessments in the PLD. Mental Health field students have 2 rotations (9 +11 weeks) All students have simulated learning sessions (uni based) to further develop skills and prepare them for practice.

Key Differences from Year 1 PLD Orientation checklist in appendix for completion in each allocation Feedback required from service users/ carers (may not be possible in every experience) Specific learning opportunities with other healthcare professionals to encourage ‘hub and spoke’. Grading of overall performance will be converted to a % by module leader Reflective accounts to be completed at the end of every allocation BEFORE mentor assessment

Important similarities to year 1 A negotiated learning agreement to be completed within initial few days. Midway comments on progress and areas for development An action plan to be completed as required. Student self-assessment Final interview with grading Skills activities based on Essential Skills Clusters

A reminder of Grading of Practice In each experience the mentor makes a judgement on the student’s overall performance. This must include skills undertaken during the experience/ This may be judged as ‘Excellent’ Very Good’ Good’, ‘Satisfactory/Pass’ or ‘Unsatisfactory/ Refer This grade will then be converted to a percentage grade by the module leader. Criteria are provided in the PLD to support the mentor.

Progression point 2 Must be assessed by a nurse mentor in the final experience of year 2. This mentor is being referred to as a Progression Mentor’ Criteria for progression include : 1)Students must work more independently with less direct supervision. 2)Students must demonstrate potential to work more autonomously

Progression Point 2 contin…

A Reminder of the Mentorship Standards Where possible students must be assessed by a qualified nurse mentor – particularly for all of their summative assessments A nurse mentor must attend annual updates and undertake ‘Triennial Review’ Students must be supervised by a nurse mentor for 40 % of their experience (directly or indirectly) Hub and Spoke experiences can be used.

Grading of Practice In each year the mentor makes a judgement on the student’s performance. This may be judged as ‘Excellent’ Very Good’ Good’, ‘Satisfactory/Pass’ or ‘Unsatisfactory/ Refer’ In year 2 and 3 of the programme this judgement will be converted to a percentage grade by the module leader Criteria are provided in the PLD to support the mentor. If a student does not meet their competencies in one placement then they will progress to their next placement and have one reassessment opportunity only. Mentors will be informed if a student requires reassessment.

Year 3 Adult and Child field students have 2 x 5 week experiences and 1 x 12 week experience (Sign-Off) Mental Health students have 1x 9 week experience and 1x 12 week experience (Sign-off) The assessment requirements in terms of supervision, grading and key interviews remain as in year 2.
