How do organisms reproduce? Know Want to know Learned

Four Corners  Using the Four Corners, go to Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree and Strongly Disagree.  Go to the corner that represents your opinion.

Move to the corner that represents your opinion:  Organisms ONLY reproduce sexually.  Organisms NEED a partner to reproduce.  Some organisms do NOT reproduce sexually.

Make your predictions  For each picture:  HOW DO YOU THINK THESE ORGANISMS REPRODUCE?

How do the organism’s reproduce?  All of them are ASEXUAL reproducing organisms!  Komodo dragon, Brassica Rapa, and Hammer head shark reproduce sexually too!

Sexual Organisms  Sexual Reproduction: production of an offspring that results when the genetic materials from two different parents are combined.  Genes from parents passed on through combination of sperm and egg to form offspring leading to genetic variation.  Examples: Humans, mammals, flowers, dogs, birds, whales, bees, fish

Advantages of Sexual Reproduction  Each offspring receives genetic material from two parents leading to genetic variation for offspring.  Genetic variation helps with environmental stress.

Disadvantages of Sexual Reproduction  Having to get an egg and sperm together for fertilization.  Takes time for organisms to grow and develop until they reproduce.

Asexual Organisms  Asexual organisms: production of offspring by one parent without sperm and an egg joining OR without a mate AKA cloning.  Reproduce through fission, budding, and through runners for plants.  Offspring are genetically identical to parent.  Examples: Hydra, spider plant, flowers, bees, sea star, yeast cells, strawberry

Advantages of Asexual Reproduction  Does NOT require a mate.  Takes less time to reproduce offspring since parent and offspring are genetically identical.  Can adapt to same environment.

Disadvantages of Asexual Reproduction  Lack of genetic variation.  Few will survive environmental stress..  Harmful mutations can occur and passed on asexually.

In groups:  Using poster size Venn Diagram.  Decide which organisms have ONLY Asexual OR Sexual Reproduction.  If you feel its both, put in the center of the venn.

Create an Advertisment  You are trying to sell a plant that has either Asexual of Sexual Reproductive characteristics  You will need to decide if you want your plant to be ASEXUAL or SEXUAL.  You must include:  Picture of your plant  Name of your plant  Characteristics that help determine whether it is asexual or sexual.

Reflection Questions  What is the difference between asexual and sexual organisms?  What is an example of asexual organism?  What is an example of sexual organism?
