Conflict  EQ: What are some common types of conflict found in a text?

Plot Plot is the literary element that describes the structure of a story. It shows arrangement of events and actions within a story.

Plot: Conflict Conflict is the dramatic struggle between two forces in a story. Without conflict, there is no plot.

Why is conflict important?  Without conflict there is no plot!  The plot diagram is made around conflict.  It is introduced in exposition and developed further in the rising action.  It is faced head on during the climax.  Begins to work it self out in the falling action  Is resolved in the Resolution

2 Main Types of Conflict  An internal conflict is just that– a conflict that takes place internally. This is better known as character vs. self. For example, a character may have to decide between right and wrong or between two solutions to a problem.  An external conflict is a conflict that can be seen physically. We know external conflicts as character vs. character, character vs. nature, and character vs. society.

Plot: Types of Conflict Man vs Nature/Environment Man vs Technology Man vs SelfMan vs Man or Character Vs. Character

Plot: Man vs. Man Conflict This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with another character, human or not human. “

Plot: Man vs. Nature Conflict This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with the forces of nature, which serve as the antagonist.

Plot: Man vs. Self Conflict In this type of conflict, the main character experiences some kind of inner conflict.

What type of conflict? 1. Jim and Mac disagreed about where they should take the dog they found. 2. Carly struggled to walk through the hot, blowing sand 3. Sarah couldn't decide what to do that night. Should she study or should she go out? 4. In the high winds, the crew was barely able to keep the ship from tilting sideways. 5. Hector thought, "Why did I ever agree to be in this play? I'll never have the nerve to act in front of an audience.” 6. After MaryAnne's brother had teased her about being afraid, she screamed at him and told him to leave her alone. 7. The snarling dog placed himself between his master and the angry stranger. 8. Jeffrey was very upset at everyone in the class for making fun of the girls. Anyone would get lost on the first day of school! What type of conflict? 1.
