Rotary International Service Projects Helen Hankins Rotary Club of Elko Desert Sunrise

Rotary  Where you have a strong host club partner  Where local needs have been identified by the host club  Because you can make a sustainable difference  Because your club is willing to participate  With partners (other D5190 clubs, host club, local organizations)

Rotary  Focus on topics that matter to your club  Listen to the needs identified by the host club  Assess host club’s interest, experience, and capacity for managing projects locally  Evaluate risks  Be passionate AND be realistic!

Rotary  Present to Board and membership  Encourage members to visit project location  Create opportunities for club members to participate locally (fundraising, other support)  Share your stories

Rotary  Make sure your club has cash contributions in budget  District Grants for projects under $35K  Global Grants for projects over $35K  Recruit partners from other D5190 Clubs  Know what your host club and host district will contribute  Fundraise beyond Rotary

Rotary  Visit location (if possible)  Skype early/often with host club project team (if possible)  Start project planning with host club at least 6 months in advance  Identify risks and develop mitigation plans  Understand who will do the work  Expect delays!

Rotary  Visit annually if possible – Skype regularly if not  Partner with local organizations (schools, hospitals, non-profits)  Know who in host club will manage the project and identify at least 2 backups  Know who is responsible for project execution (day-to-day)  Expect delays!

Rotary  Respect norms, holidays, schedules, etc.  Remember that other countries do NOT work on U.S. timelines  Leverage the Rotary network in host country to navigate the local environment  Expect delays!

Rotary  Communicate regularly to your host club partners  Work with host club to collect/record all information required for annual reporting to District and RI  Know who in local community will be responsible for sustaining the project and engage them in project evaluation

Rotary Please complete your evaluation and see you at lunch!
