C-TIP Real Time Traffic Monitoring (RTTM) and Dynamic Route Guidance (DRG) Talking Freight Seminar November 17, 2010 Paul Belella In association with:

Agenda  Project Overview  RTTM & DRG Concept  RTTM Overview  DRG Overview  RTTM & DRG Functional Layout  RTTM & DRG Operation  RTTM & DRG Schematic  Important Factors

Project Overview  Primary Objective: Make tailored real-time traffic information and route guidance available to motor carriers to mitigate congestion and reduce delay  Major Project Components  Design and Development of RTTM Module  Design and Development of DRG Module  Implementation of both in Kansas City  Connection with C-TIP  Two of several components  Fully integrated with other modules  Scalable and transferable to other locations

RTTM & DRG Concept Commercial Cellular Network Smart Phone En-route Truck RTTM/DRG Roadway Traffic Data

RTTM Overview  Telemetry Processor  Receive telemetry data  Locate trucks on routes  Traffic Interfaces  Receive traffic information from KC Scout & Navteq  Calculate link speeds and travel times  Traffic Report Generator  Formulate trip-specific travel time reports  Use of current travel time calculations  IMEX/WDU Interface  Receive requests  Forward travel time info for dissemination to trucks

DRG Overview  Primary Objective: Extend the RTTM functionality to provide navigation information to help trucks avoid congestion and minimize travel time  Approach  Calculate “best route” from location to destination  Build on RTTM and WDU applications and devices  Leverage latest in dynamic routing research and practical applications  Integrate fully with C-TIP

RTTM & DRG Functional Layout Traffic Management Center Roadway Sensors Eyewitness Reports Incident Reports Traffic Data Traffic & Route Data RTTM & DRG Applications WDU Application 3 rd Party* 5

RTTM & DRG Operation Primary Route Alternate Route #1 Alternate Route #2 At Decision Points: 3 miles from re-route point Device requests travel info RTTM/DRG execute trip calculations Primary route Alternate routes RTTM/DRG advise about shortest trip (audio notification only) At Origin: Driver enters destination Driver requests travel info RTTM/DRG execute trip calculations Primary route Alternate routes RTTM/DRG advise about shortest trip Throughout Trip: Device reports Location Heading Speed Device requests travel info Visual display is locked out for safety

RTTM & DRG Schematic

Important Factors  Collecting the right data  Multiple sources (trucks, roadway sensors, etc.)  Accurate depiction of current conditions on roads of interest  Packaging data into useful information  Designed to properly interpret the data available to it  Formulating information that can be confidently acted upon  Making information available when it is needed  The intended use underscores importance of timeliness  End users will need to interpret the information and formulate decisions quickly

Important Factors  DRG provisioning requirements  Accurate input data (reliable travel time/speed reporting)  Timely input data (low data latency)  Reliable historic data (for comparison to current data)  Rapid alternatives calculation (for quick response to user requests)  Predictive travel time modeling (to compensate for changes during trip)  Accommodation for roadway limits (i.e., restricted routes, geometric constraints, clearances)  Significant challenges  Validating DRG output  Providing useable output to drivers  Accommodating human behavior variables  Getting truckers to trust DRG recommendations

Project Contacts  Randy Butler – FHWA Project Manager   (202)  Paul Belella – RTTM/DRG Project Manager   (703) x104  Ron Schaefer – C-TIP Project Manager   (618)
