Math Career Project “Nursing”

Who I Interviewed I decided to interview my aunt who is a nurse at Harris Methodist Hospital downtown for almost 10 years. She loves her job and uses math pretty much every day in this career.

Brief Description of Nursing Duties Record weight of patient Take temperature using ear thermometer Take blood pressure measurements Measure and give shots Choose appropriate medicines and correct amounts to give to patients Continue monitoring patients

How Math is used in Nursing Nurses must know grams, milligrams, etc. to determine weight and amounts of solid medicines. Nurses must know liters, milliliters, etc. to measure liquids for shots and liquid medicines.

How Math is used in Nursing Nurses must be able to take measurements on a variety of instruments like: Weight scales Thermometers Blood pressure monitors Syringes and IV’s

Math Example Patient NameTimeMedicineAmount Bell, Anna9:00AMAmoxicillin4 cc’s Smith, Ray2:30PMTylenol1000 mg West, Lisa4:15PM Children’s Ibuprofen 4 ml

Conclusion In conclusion, I am also interested in pursuing a career as a Nurse. It is a career that is still very needed and useful in society today. I am planning on getting my nursing degree from Texas Christian University (TCU) where my aunt was educated as a nurse.
