Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo has been regarded as the epitome of platforming gaming excellence by a massive community. In order to breathe new life into this game, there has been large online support for modifying the game and creating an experience that is creative and unique. I am attempting to do just that, but still keep some essential aspects that allowed the game to succeed originally, in order to make it more approachable for newcomers to the genre. The existing “hacks” at this point in time offer a high degree of challenge instead of a curve that allows players to learn through themed gameplay. One of the biggest challenges in game design today is the problem of balance, or making sure that everyone has a fair chance to win. However, one of the most difficult challenges to overcome is balancing asymmetric games. This struggle is even worse in the field of trading card games, which have to constantly print new cards to continue earning money. With this glut of new cards, some cards are inevitably made worthless and others become too powerful to be used in competitive play. I hope to remedy this problem by designing a brand new self-contained card game that is balanced and fun. Balance involves an equal chance to win on both sides regardless of which deck you may choose to play. The production of the physical cards will be done by an external company. The final product will be a marketable product. BALANCED CARD GAME BY: PHIL SHIH “I like hats” -Anonymous
