1. Write the electron configuration and orbital notation for an Oxygen atom 30 seconds
An orbital notation is the boxes and arrows 1s2s2p An electron configuration is the superscripts: 1s 2 2s 2 2p 4
2. Write the electron configuration and orbital notation for an Oxygen ion. 30 seconds
O -2 An orbital notation is the boxes and arrows 1s2s2p An electron configuration if the superscripts: 1s 2 2s 2 2p 6
Ions Atoms will gain or lose electrons to try and become like a noble gas….ie, a complete outer energy level of electrons That goal is 8 electrons in the outermost shell (+) ions have lost electrons (-) ions have gained electrons
Add the following ion charges to your periodic table….
3. Draw a periodic table and label: group and period
Groups go down Periods go across
4. If wavelength = 3.4 x m, what is the frequency?
Light as a wave Which wave will hit wall first? Which wave has a longer wavelength? Which wave has a higher frequency?
Light as a wave C= constant = speed of light = 3 x 10 8 m/sec Wavelength = meters Frequency = Hertz or 1/sec
3 x 10 8 = 3.4 x (v) V= 8.8 x Hz or 1/sec
5. Draw which direction ionization energy increases arrows on a periodic table to show
+ +
Ionization Energy Ionization energy is the amount of energy needed to take an electron from an atom. If removing an electron helps to make the atom “happy” (8 outer electrons) it is easy to do. If removing an electron makes an atom “unhappy” or “unhappier” then it is hard to do (further from 8 outer electrons) The further the electrons are from the nucleus, the easier they are to remove (less energy to do so)
6. Which atom on the periodic table has the highest ionization energy of all ? (ignore the noble gases)
Fluorine
7. Which atom on the periodic table is the easiest to remove electrons from?
Francium
8. Draw arrows on periodic table to show how electronegativity increases.
+ +
Electronegativity Amount of pull an atom has on electrons The higher the electronegativity, the more an atom can PULL the electrons towards it
9. Which atom on the periodic table has the highest electronegativity?
Fluorine
10. Which element on the periodic table has the lowest electronegativity?
Francium
