4 th Grade Road Trip Adventures Fourth Grade – Marion Elementary September 1, 2014 Issue No. 1 Pit Stops : Math: Math is off to a Marvelous start. We are beginning the year with Place Value of Whole Numbers. We will take a look at charting data with stem and leaf plots. and will finish off September with the study of Operations. Practice your multiplication facts daily! Writing is off to an exciting start. We will be talking about the Writing Process, generating ideas, creating quick writes, and reflecting on our learning through Reflection Tickets. The students will also be learning about how Writers’ Workshop will work in class. It is going to be an exciting year with books to publish, poems to create, leads to write and so much more! Reading: Labor Day-NO School: Monday September 1 st PTA Fundraiser Kickoff: Tuesday September 9th Reading with the Eagles: Thursday September 11 th at 7:30 am Rise N Shine Assembly: Friday September 19 th Mrs. Hardy’s and Mrs. Milam’s classes perform! Monday September 22 nd : Life Touch Pictures Watch DOG Hotdog Night and PTA Meeting: Tuesday September 23 rd at 6:30 pm in Café Writing: Social Studies: This year is all about TEXAS! We will start our tour of Texas history by learning all about maps and the geography of Texas and its regions. A Few Reminders: Science: We’re starting off the year learning about science tools and reviewing safety in the lab. We are also learning to use an excellent online resource called “Stemscopes” which will be something you and your child can use together at home to review concepts covered in science class..Please call the Marion office to leave a Maverick Mail note if you need to get a message to your child regarding how he/she is getting home. Homework: Monday: Reading/Science Tuesday: Writing & Math Wednesday: None Thursday: Writing & Math Friday: None Read for 20 minutes every night! We are going to be doing lots of reading this year! The first few weeks of school will be dedicated to setting up procedures for Readers’ Workshop, reviewing how to choose “just right books”, and learning the characteristics of different book genres. Reading Rocks!! Students should bring a water bottle with a sports top to school each day. This cuts down on the amount of time they miss instruction for water breaks, and keeps spills to a minimum.

Classroom/Home Technology Connection In this section of our 4 th Grade Newsletter, the teachers will be adding helpful websites and apps your child can use at home for extra practice. Be on the lookout for new additions! Writing: om – this website offers extra grammar practicewww.chompchomp.c om Science: STEMscopes login -- this online resource will contain activities specific to your child’s current unit of study. This is a great way to review at home what was covered at school in science class. Math: Think Through Math is the main resource we encourage students to use to practice math concepts and the process of problem solving. Within the next few weeks, your child’s Math teacher will send home login information for this site. Follow us @MilamMarion4 Visit the 4 th Grade Website: 4th Grade Website Be sure to check out our team video! Conference Requests: We don’t have any required parent/teacher conferences in 4 th grade, but we are always happy to meet with you if you have questions or concerns. Please feel free to contact your child’s teachers if you every want to meet to discuss your child. Birthday Book Club The Birthday Book Club honors student’s birthday.
