Five Themes of Geography Aim: We are going to begin learning about the five themes of geography.

Geographers have developed five fundamental themes of geography Location Place Movement Human-Environment Interactions Regions

5 Themes of Geography

Location Location describes where something can be found. One way to describe location of something is to use an address. Another way is to name what something is near. What is the location of this building?

Place Describes the physical features and human features of a location. The physical features and human features of a location. The physical features of a location are natural features that include the climate, landforms, soil, bodies of water, and plants and animals. The human features are those made by people, such as population, jobs, language, customs, religion and government. How would you describe the city? (Top Picture)

Vocabulary Topography- land surface features Climate- weather conditions over a long period of time Natural resources- minerals, soil, fresh water, and other resources found in nature

Human/Environment Interaction Human/Environment Interaction describes how the environment affects people and how people affect the environment. This theme also describes how people depend upon the environment. For example, some people depend on lakes to provide them with drinking water. This describes how people adapt to their environment. The people in this picture live in Egypt, which has a hot dry climate. How do you think their clothing helps them adapt to their climate?

Movement Movement describes how and why people, goods, information, and ideas move from place to place. Movement is often described in terms of communication and transportation. Highways, railroads, and rivers, are examples of transportation networks that move people and goods from place to place. Television newspapers and computers are examples of communication tools that move information and ideas from place to place. Explain the kind of movement represented in this picture?

Regions Regions describe places on Earth with similar features. Physical features, such as landforms, natural resources, or climate, can describe a region.
