Where might this place be located? Is location given in exact terms of latitude and longitude or relative (in relation to other places)? Location (Exact /Relative Location) What is special about this place? What makes it different from other places? What physical processes shape the features and patterns of the place? What is the weather/climate like? How might people, goods, and ideas travel into and out of this place? Place (Physical/Human Characteristics) How is this place like others near or around it? Region How have people affected this environment? How might this environment affect people? Human/Environment Interaction Is there movement of people or goods? How are ideas spread from one to another? Movement

When geographers work, they are guided by two basic questions: 1)Where are things located? 2)Why are they there? To find these answers, geographers use five themes to organize information.

Movement Region Human Environment Place Location

Movement How has the place been affected by the movement of people, goods, and ideas? How Places are linked to one another and the world

Region How is the place similar to and different from other places? (political, physical, cultural)

A region has a unifying characteristic, like climate, land, population, or history. A region is a group of places that have physical features or human characteristics, or both, in common. Geographers compare regions to understand their differences and similarities

What Places Have in Common Political Regions Landform Regions Agricultural Regions Cultural Regions Climate

Human How have people changed the environment by their interaction with it? (use to, adapt, change)

How might this environment affect people? (Climate, area)

Location Where is the place? (absolute or relative) Absolute shows exactly where something is (latitude & longitude) Relative is a location of a place in relation to another place (south or down-hill) Where is It? Why is It There?

*Where a place is in relation to another place *Uses directional words to describe * –Cardinal and intermediate directions North Carolina North Carolina is bordered by Virginia on the north, South Carolina and Georgia on the south, and Tennessee on the west. The Atlantic Ocean forms North Carolina's east coast. North Carolina is one of the Southeastern States

Place What is the place like? (physical & human features)

Every place has features that make it unique from other places. This includes a location’s physical and human features. –To describe physical features, you might say that the climate is hot or cold or that the land is hilly. –To describe human features, you might discuss how many people live there, what types of work they do, or what they do for fun. *Places change over time.
