Presentation transcript:

Calculus is a program of mathematics focusing on the student’s ability to understand and apply the concepts of differential and integral calculus and advanced mathematical concepts to solve problems.

The course will include the study of limits, derivatives and integrals of the fundamental algebraic and transcendental functions expressed using : 1) analytically or algebraically, 2)graphically, 3)tabular and 4)verbally presentation. (known as the “Rule of Four”)

Emphasis is placed on the applications through problem solving involving related rates, optimization, area, volume, separable differential equations and linearization. Students are expected to be involved in developing and understanding concepts, building on problem solving skills and modeling. The ability to communicate their understanding is an important skill to be developed.

 A test will be given on each unit of work.  The objectives of the test will be outlined at the beginning of the unit.  The level of difficulty will be appropriate for preparation for the AP Calculus Exam using the format of the exam. That format will be 50% Multiple Choice and 50% Free Response Long-range Goal: 4 or 5 on the AP Exam to receive college credit for the class

There will be 2 – 3 quizzes given on each unit. Quizzes will be taken from assigned problems for homework and class practice.

 Sample AP Free Response problems will be used throughout the year as practice for the AP Exam. The problems will be graded according to the AP scoring guidelines of the exam. A score of 0 – 9 will be rewarded in compliance with the grading used for the exam.  The theme folder should be used to compile a portfolio for the exam preparation. Problem solving and writing using correct mathematics are extremely important in calculus. These skills are needed in addition to mastery of techniques and manipulations. Calculus vocabulary should be included . My Calculus Portfolio

Book: Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic Author(s): Finney/Demana/Waits/Kennedy Publisher: Prentice Hall

 Notebook (3-ringed loose leaf lined and grid paper)  Graphing Calculator (Nspire CAS or TI-84)  Mechanical Pencils (including colored pencils)  Straightedge/Compass/Protractor

 Respect others at ALL times  Instruction begins when the bell rings  Be in class on time and be ready to begin  Limit restroom requests to emergencies  Follow FSD1 Discipline Code  Clean your area before leaving class.

 I hope you enjoy this class.  I expect great things from you.  I want you all to follow your dreams  Finally, I want you to dream BIG!!! THINK
