7 th grade math standards 7.1. Core Content: Rational numbers and linear equations Core Content: Proportionality and similarity 7.3. Core Content: Surface area and volume 7.4. Core Content: Probability and data 7.5. Additional Key Content 7.6. Core Processes: Reasoning, problem solving, and communication

7 th grade text – aligning w/ the standards Filling & Wrapping – volume & surface area Accentuate the Negative – rational number operations Moving Straight Ahead – 2 step equations Stretching & Shrinking – similarity Comparing & Scaling – propotionality Filling & Wrapping – volume & surface area What Do You Expect – probability Data About Us – data & stats

Why are these standards important? As students solve these types of problems, they build a strong foundation for the study of linear functions that will come in grade eight. Students further prepare for algebra by learning how to use exponents to write numbers in terms of their most basic (prime) factors. Statistics, including probability, is considered one of the most important and practical fields of study for making sense of quantitative information, and it plays an important part in secondary mathematics in the 21st century. With a strong understanding of how to work with both two-dimensional and three- dimensional figures, students build an important foundation for the geometry they will study in high school. With a good understanding of how things grow proportionally, students can understand the linear relationships that are the basis for much of high school mathematics. Using generalized algebraic skills and approaches, students can approach a wide range of problems involving any type of rational number, adapting strategies for solving one problem to different problems in different settings with underlying similarities.

Is my student meeting state standards? When you check your students grade on Data Warehouse, each grade will be labeled with a performance expectation, ex. 7.1 C – comparing & ordering rational numbers. If your student received a 3 or 4 they met standard. If they received a 0, 1, 2 they did not met standard.

How can I help my student be successful? If your student is unhappy with an assessment grade, please encourage them to do the following; Find the performance expectation (PE)they need to work on by either holding onto their assessment or checking on data warehouse. Review and practice the skill(s) by completing homework, downloading website practice links & documents. Schedule a time with me afterschool for a retake. Your student’s grade will be changed to reflect their new learning.

How to help my student be successful Ms. Erickson, in portable 2, will group my 6 th graders with an 8 th grade tutor on Tuesdays after school. This is a wonderful opportunity for your student to practice the skill(s) they are struggling with. Students must have paper & a pencil and know what PE they are working on before going to Ms. Erickson’s room.

Homework Please go to Data Warehouse, under “class calendar” to view weekly homework assignments. Your student’s math grade will show how well they’ve mastered state standards. A second grade will be given showing how well they’ve done on the skills needed to be a successful student.
