Purpose of Canvas Digital distribution of what used to be paper Work flow Paper worksheet – looks the same but now completed with an annotation app instead of a pencil Fill-in the blank, matching, multiple choice handouts/quizzes – converted to a Canvas Assignment or Quiz and completed in Canvas by the student, turned in through Canvas and then graded in Canvas by the teacher Digital Whiteboard Whatever you write on the board can be “written” in Canvas as well Canvas acts as a 2nd whiteboard in your digital classroom Announcements can be communicated Daily Schedules can be accessed

Canvas: Work Flow in the Classroom Log in to usd489.instructure.com Enter your Username (Ex. mhenderson) Enter your password – same as your email

Course Examples Help Menu – Click “Help” on the top right toolbar Select “Search the Canvas Guides” Enter “templates” in the search bar You may have to scroll down and select “More” and then “All Content Resources”

Course Examples Select “Sample Course Templates” Scroll Down to “Multi-Subject, in page Navigation” Select “Click for live preview” Read about the course on this page

Multi-Subject in page Navigation Once you read the overview information select “Click to Go to Course Home” to preview the course Look around – take every possible link and see what you like or don’t like

Another Example Select “Help” on the top right toolbar Select “Search the Canvas Guides” Enter “course examples” in the search bar You may again have to select “More” and then “All Content Resources” Select “Example Courses by subject” and scroll ¾ of the way down the page to a red heading called “Other” Select “2nd Grade Class”

Navigate the Example Again, explore every link – decide what you like and don’t like Compare it to the other Canvas course we explored

Summing Up Our Exploration Both of these courses utilize what Canvas calls “Pages” to distribute information to their students Very much like how a teacher used to utilize a website The main difference: You can utilize it all day to send your students what they need to engage with the iPad in your classroom

Creating a “Shell” Course Return to the home screen at any time by clicking the “Canvas” icon – top left corner Create a shell by clicking “Start a New Course” – right toolbar This window will pop up – give it a “sample” name or use the name of one of your courses

Building your Shell Notice the “Unpublished” on the right in red Click “Setup Checklist” to see a wealth of resources Read through each step by clicking through the list

Downloading a Template Select “Click to Download” Select the zip file Select the box in the lower left corner

Uploading the Template Select “Settings” on the left toolbar Then Select “Import Content into this Course” on the right toolbar

Uploading the Template Select the “Content Type” dropdown menu Pick “Canvas Export Package” Then Select “Choose File” Double click “”tmplt” Select “All Content” Select “Import”

Importing Files Canvas allows your students access to everything they’ll need for you class In Course Navigation (left toolbar), select “Files” Click “Upload” Windows Explorer allows you to pick files not folders Use ctrl + click to select more than one Or drag and drop single files

Add a Folder Click +Folder to create a folder Name it and press Enter Must press Enter to lock it in Drag and drop files into it Or select several and use the “move” icon Select the appropriate folder, then click “Move”

It’s Your Turn Open “Files” on the Course Navigation Toolbar Upload files Create at least two folders and place files in them You have 5 minutes to complete this task

Settings Click “Settings” – top right corner Click “Edit” – right toolbar Edit “Display Name” – what do your student’s call you? “Update Settings”

Notifications Ways to Connect – right toolbar Add email addresses or cell phone numbers Click “Notifications” – left toolbar Determine the timeliness of each notification by hovering over the current setting and selecting the one you want ASAP Daily Weekly Not at all

Creating Pages Select “Pages” on the Course Navigation on the left side of the page (used for instructions, to share links, describe tasks, summarize information of any kind) Select “+Page”

Creating Pages This Rich Content Editor can be manipulated much like a Word document – add anything you want your students to see! You can link it to another location in the course by highlighting text and then selecting something from the right side toolbar

Creating Pages You can also add your own images from files you’ve uploaded Place your cursor where you want your image to be inserted on the page, then click the file or upload a new one

It’s Your Turn Open “Pages” on the Course Navigation Toolbar Add at least two pages (one can be your home page if you’re going for that course structure) Create at least two links on one of the pages Link at least one alternate location within the course and at least one image You can also try linking a URL – see if you can figure out how! You have 5 minutes to complete this task

Using the Calendar The calendar feature serves many functions inside Canvas – make assignments here, create events, remind students of due dates, etc. Click “+” to add a new event or assignment Events you create on the Calendar will not appear on the Assignments page or in the Gradebook. But they will show up on the Syllabus page and student calendars. You can create events with due date times as well as all-day events.

Making an Assignment in the Calendar Select the Due Date by clicking the tiny calendar icon Select the Course for which you are creating the Assignment using the dropdown menu Select “More Options”
