French Residential Trip for the current Year 4 and 5 Mrs Britton- French subject leader Miss Wassell- Educational Visits Coordinator

Why France? What better way to inspire and motivate our children than with a trip to France? A trip based around cultural, educational and above all enjoyable excursions is the ideal opportunity to make all the “French learning” come to life.

What is OFSTED looking for? School trips can also make a major contribution to the acquisition of knowledge and development of skills. Studies of the present and past, science and arts, language and music can all be enhanced outside the classroom. Hudson, M. (2014) School Trips: Benefits far outweigh risk, The Guardian. Within successful Primary Schools, curriculums are enriched by first-hand experiences, including visits locally and further afield, contributions from adults with knowledge and skills that could enhance pupils’ learning, and an extensive range of extra-curricular activities. Ofsted (2002), ‘The curriculum in successful primary schools’ pg.553.

What does the new National Curriculum state? Language teaching at KS2 provides the foundation for further learning of languages, equipping children to study in other countries. The focus of study in modern languages will be on practical communication.

What do we already do? All years are taught French for 45 mn a week We have a French Learning board in the hall We answer the register in French during assemblies We deliver workshops to parents (Year 4 Fun with France on the 14 th March) We have planned a French market for the 04 th July 2014 We have a French page on the website and a French curriculum page We communicate regularly with our French link school

What would be the next step? ?

Le Pré Catelan, The Opal Coast Just over an hour from Calais, the Opal Coast is a popular and easily accessible location - perfect for an introduction to France. Accommodation is at PGL Le Pré Catelan, a small and friendly centre close to the beach and town centre at Hardelot.

Where is it situated?

What does it look like?

Why choose this centre? Proximity- shorter travel time Especially designed for Year 6 pupils The area is rich in French culture and language with links to other NC areas such as history, geography and others Quality of educational experiences delivered by PGL staff

Popular Excursions include: Traditional boulangerie Nausicaa Sealife Centre Etaples Cemetery Le Touquet Market La Coupole Chocolaterie de Beussent Montcavrel Goat Farm Les Escargots du Bocage Bec à Suc Sweet Factory Aqualud Waterpark

Activities Groups may take advantage of free on-site activities if they wish to combine them with their programme of excursions: – Beach Games – Bouldering Wall – Challenge Course – Coastal Walk – Excursions – Kite Flying – Problem Solving – Survivor

Facilities On-site activity bases Spacious dining room Teachers' lounge with complimentary tea and coffee Private gardens and grounds Shop WiFi for teachers Throughout your stay we have the full support of PGL centre staff, including a dedicated PGL Group Leader. They liaise between us and the other centre staff to ensure the smooth running of the trip. They also accompany us on most excursions and organise a full programme of evening entertainment.

Accommodation Le Pre Catelan - A small and friendly PGL centre in a converted 19th century hotel. Located minutes from the beach and town centre it offers easy and convenient travelling times from the UK. Pupils: Multi-bedded rooms, each with a wash basin. Toilets are on each floor and there is a separate, newly refurbished, shower block. Party Leaders: Twin or triple en suite rooms with hot drink facilities.

What will the children get out of this? Such an experience will enable the children to become: Confident individuals Successful learners Responsible citizens Smoother transition to Year7

How much does it cost? £375 per child (based on 40 children) The cost includes: – Accommodation – Full board – Transport – Insurance – Activities and excursions How much?

Spreading the cost: We would need a NON REFUNDABLE initial deposit of £50 by the 06 th June We would like to offer parents the chance to continue to pay by instalments using a payment card. This would results in: £32.50 per month from June 2014 until April

Thank you for your time. Au revoir.....
