Top Tip Know the marking criteria so you know what examiners are looking for

Criterion A – Understanding of the text The analysis should show knowledge and understanding of the formal elements and content of a previously unseen text. There needs to be a clear understanding of the target audience, the purpose and the context of the text. The comparative analysis must be supported by relevant examples from the text. 5 marks

Criterion B - Understanding of the use and effects of stylistic features The analysis should show an understanding of how various stylistic features, such as language, structure, tone, technique and style, are used to construct meaning. The analysis should comment on the effects that these features (including the features of visual texts) have on the reader. 5 marks

The author uses informal, conversational language to great effect The author uses informal, conversational structure in his language, “I’ve learned everything I know off of records,” to give the impression of a friendly conversation between equals, with no airs or graces. This not only makes the reader feel they have privileged access to this celebrity’s mind, it also ties in with the subject he is discussing, which is the liberation from the formal rules of music which the blues allows. Likewise, he shrugs of the formal rules of grammar in his writing.

Top Tip The IB will always give you texts that are filled with stylistic features... So don’t panic!

Criterion C - Organisation and development The analysis must be well organised. Furthermore, it must be developed. 5 marks

Criterion D - Language The language of the comparative analysis must be clear, varied and accurate. It should be appropriate, meaning it contains formal sentence structure, good choice of words and effective terminology. 5 marks

Top Tip Make sure to use some technical vocabulary. Check your own grammar, spelling and punctuation. Take the time to proofread. It is worth it!
