Language and Literature SL Paper 1 Analysis and Annotation: How To

Top Tip Know the marking criteria so you know what examiners are looking for

Criterion A – Understanding of the text The analysis should show knowledge and understanding of the formal elements and content of a previously unseen text. There needs to be a clear understanding of the target audience, the purpose and the context of the text. The comparative analysis must be supported by relevant examples from the text. 5 marks

Criterion B - Understanding of the use and effects of stylistic features The analysis should show an understanding of how various stylistic features, such as language, structure, tone, technique and style, are used to construct meaning. The analysis should comment on the effects that these features (including the features of visual texts) have on the reader. 5 marks

The author uses informal, conversational language to great effect The author uses informal, conversational structure in his language, “I’ve learned everything I know off of records,” to give the impression of a friendly conversation between equals, with no airs or graces. This not only makes the reader feel they have privileged access to this celebrity’s mind, it also ties in with the subject he is discussing, which is the liberation from the formal rules of music which the blues allows. Likewise, he shrugs of the formal rules of grammar in his writing.

Show an understanding of the … effects that these features (including the features of visual texts) have on the reader

“Handwritten” = personal Implies spontaneity Flouts normal rules of form of memoir (printed, carefully edited) Link between idea of a “jailbreak” to liberate the notes, and a similar rebellion, liberating his own ideas/words. Show an understanding of the … effects that these features (including the features of visual texts) have on the reader

Top Tip The IB will always give you texts that are filled with stylistic features... So don’t panic!

Criterion C - Organisation and development The analysis must be well organised. Furthermore, it must be developed. 5 marks

Criterion D - Language The language of the comparative analysis must be clear, varied and accurate. It should be appropriate, meaning it contains formal sentence structure, good choice of words and effective terminology. 5 marks

Top Tip Make sure to use some technical vocabulary. Check your own grammar, spelling and punctuation. Take the time to proofread. It is worth it!

You’re in the exam … Read both texts Choose your text Read your text again with a pen/pencil/highlighter in your hand Jot down your central argument Read a third time Plan your line of argument Start writing Check your writing

Introduction Identify the text type. “Give the Title” is an autobiographical extract published in ______ (date, plus name of newspaper/website etc. if applicable, and also place of publication if you can discern it) and its main premise is _________. So what? You need to say what you are going to do with this text. ******THESIS STATEMENT******

Main Body of Argument You must identify: Audience Purpose Context.

Stylistic Features Structure and Organisation Figurative Language Tone and Mood Graphology and Typology Style You don’t have much time, so pick 2 or 3 options here. You can’t do everything in 90 minutes!

Conclusion Justify the introduction Explain the text again Restate your thesis

Over to you Working with someone from the “other” class, write the introduction for a textual analysis on the texts you will be given. Then identify 3 or 4 stylistic features and decide how you would discuss their effects on the audience. Prizes for the best one!
