The Skeletal System

Functions: 1. Provides a supporting framework for your body. 2. Allows movement ( with help from muscular system).

Functions cont. 3. Protects internal organs. 4. Storage place for calcium, phosphorus. 5. Production of red and white blood cells.

Types of Bones 1. LONG: FEMUR, HUMERUS 2. SHORT: BONES IN WRISTS, ANKLES 3. FLAT: RIBS, SKULL BONES 4. IRREGULAR: VERTEBRAE

Problems: 1. Fractures. 2. Scoliosis: curvature of spine. 3.Osteoporosis: loss of calcium in bones. Bones break easy, and back may become hunched.

Problems cont. 4. Osteomyelitis: inflammation of surface of bone. (from bacteria) 5. Injuries to joints: stretched, torn from too much pressure.
