Collection of Land Use Statistics in Bermuda CARICOM’s 2 nd Workshop on Environment Statistics April 7 th -8 th 2014 St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Overview of Presentation Land Use Definitions Data Collection Methods & Data Source Method of Computation Highlights of Land Use Land Use by Parish Population Density Data Gaps Strengths & Challenges Land Use Data Provider

Land Use Definitions Wet open land Non-wooded sites either partially, temporarily or permanently water-logged Water may be fresh, brackish or saline, on blanket or raised peat lands Water may be either stagnant or running Water is usually shallow, especially if it is saline Dry open land with special vegetation cover Non-wooded land Covered by low vegetation Size is less than 2 metres

Land Use Definition - Examples Wet open land Spittal Pond Warwick Pond Coots Pond Dry open land with special vegetation cover Parks –Nature Reserves (Open Space) Farm Land

Data Collection Methods & Data Source Data Collection Method Electronic mail-out of data tables Self completion of data tables by stakeholder Electronic return of data tables by deadline Primary Data Source Ministry of Environment and Planning Department of Planning, Senior Planning Officer

Method of Computation Ad hoc fly over by Land Surveys and Registration Department Fly over provides a topographical layout of the Island of Bermuda Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software used to map the various types of land usage GIS calculates area of each land usage type e.g. commercial- retail; open space- natural reserves

Map depicts the Topographical Layout of Bermuda

Highlights of Land Use Data In 2001, residential properties occupied 45.1% of all land in Bermuda, equivalent to roughly 5,984 acres Open space comprises golf courses, nature reserves, other recreation and rural areas and represents 33.3% or 4,417 acres Commercial land accounts for 1.7% of all occupied land space in Bermuda. e.g. retail and office space

Land Use Type

Use of Land by Type and Acreage

Land Use By Parish Bermuda comprises of nine (9) Parishes. The Parish of St. George – least populous St. George holds the largest share of land with 2, acres. Of this, one-third is open space St. George is known for its golf courses, nature reserves, recreational and other rural open space Bermuda’s only airport is located in St. George The Parish of Pembroke - most populous Pembroke occupies the least amount of land with 1, acres. Of this, 65% is deemed residential space

Land Use for Parish, City & Town By Activity Type

Land Use for Parish, City & Town By Infrastructure

Population Density

Population Density - Highlights the total population density for Bermuda was 3,097 persons per square mile Pembroke Parish was the most densely populated with 5,028 persons per square mile St. Georges was the least densely populated with 1,642 persons per square mile Based on the 2010 Census findings:

Data Gaps 2001 Land Survey was conducted by the Department of Planning and is the only source for obtaining land use data The lack of funding restricts frequency of mapping exercise by the Department of Planning Detailed maps updated only after mapping exercise Last flyover undertaken in 2013 Updated data will be ready by 2015

Data Collection - Strengths & Challenges Strengths G.I.S. technology can map out and provide accurate measurements of Bermuda’s land and marine areas Prompt response in obtaining data from stakeholder Challenge Budget constraints prohibit more frequent topographical mappings Ad hoc flyovers only i.e. no regular frequency

Land Use Tables – Data Provider The Ministry of Environment and Planning, more specifically, the Department of Planning is the primary source for providing data needed to populate the Land Use tables.

Annual publication posted on Department's website at topical sections outlining environmental indicators Contributors comprise 12 stakeholders (primarily public sector) Summary
