PROFILE Name: Silvia Jobson Born: October 1939 Present age: 74 years old

ENGLAND In England she lived with my mother, Jean Audrey Millar her father Sydney James swift and my brother, Anthony James. She went to school with all of her friends and was living a very happy life.

Reason they came to Australia My great grandma came to Australia because her brother Anthony was seriously ill and England could not provide for him. Her parents had a choice to go to America, Canada or Australia. Of cause, they chose Australia.

Feelings when she found out When my grandma first heard that she hear parents and her brother were all going to Australia she was very upset and didn’t want to leave England. She was around 15 at the time and was extremely against the idea of leaving her friends and family back in England. Her and her family had to leave her grandma back in England. When she went to say goodbye to her grandma she wasn’t there. She never saw her again.

Coming to Australia My grandma and her family departed England on the 14 th of June 1952 on a ship called ‘The Cheshire’. About 1000 people from both England and Ireland came on the same ship to Australia. The woman and the men were separated into different cabins for sleeping butgot together for meals. They slept on bunk beds. Her father didn’t want to bring that much on the boat so all my grandma brought was a book, clothes a doll and that is it. On the way to Australia the ship stopped at portside.

Life in Australia When the ship came to shore we all got together and went to hawthorn. My grandma didn’t have any kind of schooling life in Australia just went strait to work. She now lives a happy life in Australia and had a daughter and a son named Linda and Mark.

Why do people immigrate? People immigrate for: -Health -Weal being -Fortune -War And many other reasons

Why was Australia chosen as a country by the Europeans an Asians as a place of migration? Many Europeans came hear during and after the war. Others came because of the 10 pound prom which was created by the Australian government to bring people to Australia to help rebuild the country. Others came because of the gold rush.

What effects has migration had on communities and cultures in Australia? All the people that came and are still coming to Australia come from all different places and bring all kinds of food celebrations and personalities to the country. Australia has progressed into being a multicultural society full of so many wonderful different cultures.

What are some of the challenges faced by immigrants in their new country? Some might fid it harder to get used to: -Weather -Language -Friends -Money -Health And many more
