Presentation transcript:

You need: Pencil/pen Journal Packet Journal 11/14/14: The governor of Arkansas announced yesterday that within the next few weeks he plans to pardon his son from drug charges. D, C, Q: A government official should be allowed to pardon whomever they wish, regardless of affiliation or familial ties. Hi!

Agenda: Journal: Political Pardons Journal Explode Review “The Ballot or the Bullet” Group Analysis Stick with the same device as “LFBJ” Complete the same poster 4-square. Finish notes Select 3 devices to compare/contrast—start your outline. Homework: Outline due on Monday. Draft due on Tuesday READ ZEITOUN through page 86 by THURSDAY. When you leave you will have: -analyzed rhetorical devices used in “The Ballot or the Bullet”.

Journal Explode Review CONCERNS “I believe that United States Citizens should have access to the Death with Dignity Act.” Using rhetorical questions as thesis statements. “Is the man’s response extreme, or did the police department make a foolish judgment?” Using YOU anywhere. Not using the assigned rhetorical devices.

SOLUTIONS “I believe that United States Citizens should have access to the Death with Dignity Act.” Cut it out. Your sentence will sound STRONGER because you are not explicitly relying on a teenager’s opinion. Removing “I believe” turns opinion into fact. Using rhetorical questions as thesis statements. “Is the man’s response extreme, or did the police department make a foolish judgment?” Implies a lack of confidence and reliance upon the audience. A thesis always needs to have a subject, claim, and reason. “Ultimately, organizations should consider intelligence levels, but should not solely relay on them for hiring purposes.” Using YOU anywhere. “If your resume looks very impressive, from your excellent references to your stellar college that you graduated from, employers can believe they can’t afford you.” Using “you” isolates the audience. What if the reader has NOT gone to college and does NOT have excellent references? Fix: “If a person’s resume is impressive—from their references to their college experience—an employer may believe they cannot employ that person.” Not using rhetorical devices. They aren’t just for funzies. How will you learn them and master them by May 13 if you don’t PRACTICE them? Good control of devices = good writing = earning college credit = not paying $1,000+ for a college class you where you’ll repeat a lot of the same things we do here every single day.
