Building a Legacy Worth Leaving A Study in Hebrews 11 Harry W. Lewis

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command. By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them. By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned. Hebrews 11:23-29

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  Moses’ Life Divided into three 40 year periods – First in Pharaoh’s palace – Second on the back side of the desert – Third leading Israel out of Egypt  Moses’ life revealed both tragedy and victory

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  Moses’ legacy began with his parents  They were part of the multitude in Egypt – 70 entered Egypt (Exodus 1:1-6) – 600,000 men + women and children now existed (Exodus 1:7-22) – This was a concern for the Egyptians (there are more of them than us!)

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  Leadership had changed in Egypt – He did not know Joseph – He was concerned about the growing number of Israelites – His edict was that all male children were to be killed at birth

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  These were the circumstances of Moses’ birth!  But his parents acted by faith – Hid him for three months – Placed him in a basket in the river for Pharaoh’s daughter to find – Trusted the providence of God  They left a great legacy by faith

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  First forty years (Exodus 2) – Reared in Pharaoh’s palace – Aware of the Israelites burdens – Killed an Egyptian who was beating an Israelite – Israelites did not accept him – Pharaoh tried to kill him – He endured as seeing Him Who is invisible: the very essence of faith Hebrews 11:1

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  Second forty years (Exodus 2-3) – Fled to Midian – Served Jethro – tended sheep (Normal life) – King of Egypt died – The Israelites cried out to God – God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  God’s Call on His Life (Exodus 3) – It was at the place of God (Horeb) – It was the Person of God (Angel of God) – It was unmistakable – got his attention – It defied understanding A bush that was burning but not being consumed – It was an encounter with God – Holy Ground I am the God of your father – Abraham, Isaac and Jacob

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  God’s Call on His Life (Exodus 3) – God’s purpose explained: Saw the suffering of the Israelites I have come to deliver them to the promised land I will send YOU to Pharaoh to deliver them

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  God’s Call on His Life (Exodus 3) – Moses’ excuses: Who am I? – not a person of significance I will not be accepted by the Israelites I cannot speak eloquently

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader Our greatest fear should not be the greatness of a task. Our greatest fear should be that we miss the opportunity to serve God in a great way!

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  God’s Call on His Life (Exodus 3) – The stage is set – Aaron to speak for Moses – God to speak to Moses – Moses is 80 – never too old to serve God

Session Nine: Humility to be a Leader  Third Forty Years of Moses Life – Moses kept the Passover by faith (Exodus ) – Moses crossed the Red Sea on dry ground (Exodus 14) – Moses the most humble man on earth – his greatest legacy (Numbers 12:3)
