Moses Leads Israel out of Egypt Taught by Tyler Weidler

 God calls Abraham to a new land  Abraham’s obedience and fickleness  Birth of Isaac  Testing of Abraham  Jacob and Esau  God renames Jacob  Importance of Jacob’s son Judah  Jacob and his sons move to Egypt

 Israel has been in Egypt for 430 years (Ex. 12:40,41) God told Abraham this would happen (Gen. 15:13)  Israel entered Egypt as a family of 70 people (Ex. 1:5)  Israel exited Egypt as a nation with 603,550 military men. (Num. 1:46) (Does not count Levites 22,000, kids, women, or elderly) Israel obeyed God’s first command, and was very fruitful. Ex. 1:7

 Pharaoh of Egypt orders that all Hebrew boys be killed at birth Prevents further multiplication Reduces potential for revolt Forces Hebrew women to marry Egyptian men and lose their national identity  Moses’ mother hides him for three months then puts him in a basket in the Nile  Moses is rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in the royal family

 Moses lived in the royal house for 40 years  Moses kills an Egyptian who had abused a Hebrew slave  Moses flees to Midian, where he lives for 40 more years  God calls Moses to return to Egypt to bring Israel out. (Burning bush)

 Magicians are able to replicate first two plagues Not able to stop any of the plagues  First nine plagues do not require Israel to do anything God causes many of the plagues to miss the land of Goshen No risk required No trust required

 God tells Israel to take a male sheep or goat (ram) on the 10 th day of the month  Keep the ram at your house until the 14 th day of the month  Kill it on the 14 th Put its blood all over your doorframe Eat it (the ram) This will protect you from God, who will kill every firstborn in Egypt (avenges Pharaoh’s genocide)  Be ready to leave in a hurry

 Ex. 7:1 “I will make you as God to Pharaoh”  amun-ra is the chief god of Egypt  amun-ra is a ram

 amun-ra was the god of the sun  Ninth plague darkened the sun for three days  Rams were considered holy in Egypt. This is why Israel lives in Goshen in the first place Exodus 8:25,26 – “Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God within the land." But Moses said, "It is not right to do so, for we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what is an abomination to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not then stone us?”

 Required trust in God Belief that God would protect them Belief that God would be strong enough to defeat amun-ra

 Israel follows Moses out of Egypt  They take an indirect route (Ex. 13:17)  Pharaoh pursues, and Israel is stuck up against the Red Sea

 Read Exodus 19

1. No other lovers When Israel worships idols, God always calls it adultery 2. No pictures of other lovers Statues and pictures of other gods were very common 3. Take my name and wear it well 4. Spend time together

 Israel heard God give the 10 commandments  The two stone tablets came later  While Moses was up the mountain getting the tablets, Israel made a golden calf to worship  Calf’s name was probably apis, a god of Egypt that was a cow

 Moses gets the tablets, written by God, and descends the mountain  Moses, in his anger, throws down the tablets and they break  Moses has to go back up the mountain to carve out two more tablets. He has to carve these himself

 Israel reaches the Promised Land  Spies enter the land and report that it is dangerous  Israelites are afraid and refuse to enter the land  Joshua and Caleb insist that God can win the land for them  Israelites refuse to trust God, and threaten to kill Joshua and Caleb, preferring to return to Egypt.

 God says that because of their disobedience he will never let them enter the land  God says Israel will wander the desert for 40 years until the entire generation dies off  Israel changes mind, and tries to invade anyway Afraid to invade with God’s help, but willing to try without God  Canaanites destroy Israelite army and chase them away

 Explains why God cares so much about marriage  When Israel sins with idols, God calls it adultery  Establishes importance of Passover celebration and other offerings  Foreshadows Christ and the church

 Construction of the tabernacle  Construction of the Ark of the Covenant  Construction of 1 st and 2 nd temples
