© 2012 Emmanuel Gospel Center Living System Ministry Observation The First Stage of the Process of the Gospel and a Useful Tool in Ministry

What is it?  Definition: An act of noticing, perceiving, or watching attentively.  A tool for understanding the needs of an individual, group or community.  An essential starting place for any ministry endeavor.  Our goal is to learn before we do anything else. © 2012 Emmanuel Gospel Center

God models observation  “God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.” Exodus 2:25 God’s compassionate observation of the Children of Israel in slavery under Pharaoh moved him to action.  “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight…” Hebrews 4:13 © 2012 Emmanuel Gospel Center

Taking time to observe We can develop a skill of observation, but it is something we seldom take the time to do in our hurried culture. We want to act quickly! Can you name three things you observe about the living system you’re working in? © 2012 Emmanuel Gospel Center

Its usefulness  Living systems are complex! We cannot assume that we know all about them until we take the time to learn how the system works.  Through observation, we can start to gain an understanding of: How the living system works How God is already at work in that system © 2012 Emmanuel Gospel Center

How do you do it? Observing a living system involves:  trying to see people in the way they really operate  reflecting on what we see and hear  willingness to learn from others  intentionally studying the situation  praying, “Lord, give us eyes to see!” © 2012 Emmanuel Gospel Center

Final words  Our goal in observation is to learn about people in the context of the dynamic complexity of the world around them. No matter where you find yourself in ministry, become a learner. Humble yourself to be open to what God will teach you as you look around. © 2012 Emmanuel Gospel Center
