The Wilderness Campaign Grant first campaign against Lee's Army of Northern Virginia became known as the Wilderness Campaign. It was series of battles designed to capture the Confederate capitial of Richmond Virginia. Grant's Army of 120,000 men, advanced across the Rapidan River into a place in Virginia known as the Wilderness. It was called the Wilderness due to the large number of trees and dense ground cover in the area.

Battle of Cold Harbor Lee met Grant's army, in the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5 and 6, Union troops were successful at moving the Confederate troops back toward Richmond Although, Grant experienced the worst defeat, losing 7,000 men at the Battle of Cold Harbor, he continue his advance. However, Lincoln worried about the time that it was taking for Grant to defeat the South because of his re- election drawing near.

Total War & Sherman’s March to the Sea Lincoln calls in General William Tecumseh Sherman to assist in carrying out the Unions plans to win the war. Sherman would achieve this by destroying any and all southern railroads, industry, bridges, crops, livestock, and any other resource that existed in attempt at “Total War.” He wanted to break the South’s will to fight by marching Union troops through the heart of the Confederacy.

End of the War  April 3, Grant took Richmond Va, which was the final blow to Lee's army  Lee surrenders on April 9, 1865 at APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE  All Confederate troops forced to take an oath of loyalty to U.S.  Otherwise, terms of surrender were lenient  Lincoln didn't want a humiliated South and further conflict  Issue of states' rights now "solved"-  Federal gov't had asserted its status

After four bloody years of civil war, the South was defeated.

Over 618,000 military deaths during Civil War.
