Weapons Swords Bayonets Ships Cannons: Napoleon, Howitzer Pistols: Colt Navy 1851, Colt Army 1860 and the Starr Revolver. The Starr Revolver was one of the most used handguns on the Union side.

Battles (1 of 6) Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863 Gettysburg Generals: *George G. Meade (union) * Robert E. Lee (confederacy) Casualties:51,112 Significance- the Battle of Gettysburg did not end the war, it was the great battle of the war, marking the point when the ultimate victory of the North over the South became clear to both sides alike.

Battles (2 of 6) Battle of Shiloh April 6-7, 1862 Shiloh Generals: Ulysses S. Grant(union) Albert S. Johnston(confederacy) Casualties: 23,741 Significance- This battle could have been a huge victory for the Confederacy. However, with its loss and the immense loss of human life on both sides, leaders began to realize that the Civil War would not quickly end.

Battles (3 of 6) Battle of Chancellorsville April 30 th -May 6, 1863 Chancellorsville Generals: Joseph Hooker(union) Robert E. Lee(confederacy) Casualties: 30, 099 Significance: This battle was considered by many historians to be Lee’s greatest victory. At the same time, the South lost one of its greatest strategic minds with the death of Stonewall Jackson.

Battles (4 of 6) Battle of Spotsylvania May 8-21 st, 1864 Spotsylvania Generals: Ulysses S. Grant(union) Robert E. Lee(confederacy) Casualties: 27,399 Significance: Grant decided to disengage and continue his overland campaign towards Richmond. However, each of the successive battles that Grant met on this advance resulted in huge casualties earning Grant the nickname ‘Butcher Grant’.

Battles (5 of 6) Battle of Antietam September 16-18, 1862 Sharpsburg Generals: George B. McClellan(union) Robert E. Lee(confederacy) Casualties: 26,134 The Battle of Antietam forced the Confederate Army to retreat back across the Potomac River. President Lincoln saw the significance of this and issued the famous Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862.

Battles (6 of 6) Second Battle of Manassas August 28-30, 1862 Bull Run/ Manassas Generals: John Pope(union) Robert E. Lee(confederacy) Casualties: 25, 251 Significance: The Second Battle of Bull Run was a very important victory for the South. In fact, it was the most decisive battle in the Northern Virginia campaign for the Confederates.

Transportation Ships- Ironclads, Steamships, Blockade Runner were used for moving across bodies of water or for battles. Railroads- Trains (used for transporting military goods) Horseback/Walking- Most troops would walk everywhere and some would ride in wagons pulled by horses. Generals typically rode on horse back.

How did the Civil War Affect America’s Future? The society that was created by the Emancipation Proclamation looked very different from our society today. Though slaves were emancipated they were never treated equally until much later in our history. The Jim Crow laws of the times made it difficult for blacks to gain equality. Laws that included poll taxes and literacy test were designed to keep blacks as an inferior class.

End of the Civil War End Date: April 9 th,1865 Location: Appomattox Courthouse I think the significance of the civil war was that it really only happened because Lincoln the country to be one again. I don’t think it is his fault but I do believe that everyone had some part in it. Everyone thinks and feels different about different things and the south just couldn’t accept that.
