Lee(confederacy) Casualties: 26,134 The Battle of Antietam forced the Confederate Army to retreat back across the Potomac River. President Lincoln saw the significance of this and issued the famous Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862.

In fact, it was the most decisive battle in the Northern Virginia campaign for the Confederates.

Transportation Ships- Ironclads, Steamships, Blockade Runner were used for moving across bodies of water or for battles. Railroads- Trains (used for transporting military goods) Horseback/Walking- Most troops would walk everywhere and some would ride in wagons pulled by horses. Generals typically rode on horse back.

How did the Civil War Affect America’s Future? The society that was created by the Emancipation Proclamation looked very different from our society today. Though slaves were emancipated they were never treated equally until much later in our history. The Jim Crow laws of the times made it difficult for blacks to gain equality. Laws that included poll taxes and literacy test were designed to keep blacks as an inferior class.

I don’t think it is his fault but I do believe that everyone had some part in it. Everyone thinks and feels different about different things and the south just couldn’t accept that.
