Tilaka A religious mark worn mainly on the forehead, and is made of sandal paste, clay or ash. Worn by Vaishnavas, and Shaivas. Different types mean different schools of theology.

Known as the Dastaar. Wound around the head several times and held in place by own tension. Taught at young age. Ends must be tucked in.

Meant to become one with head. Reminder of principles of faith. Discipline, honestly, sound ethics, spirituality, and humility. Commitment to gurus. Controls long hair that is another sign of commitment to religion.

Can affect a man psychologically. Gives inner strength and helps channel the virtuousness of the gurus. Encouraged to behave better.
