German sociologist Published The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism in 1904 Religion existed because people needed a system of basic beliefs to make sense of existence, identity and derive meaning.
Form of Protestantism Founded by John Calvin during the reformation. Assisted the emergence of modern capitalism in Northern Europe. Spirit of capitalism – based on systematic, efficient and rational pursuit of profit. Connection on Calvinist beliefs
Predestination – God selects who will be saved (prior to birth). There is nothing that can be done to change this fate. Divine Transcendence – No human knows the will of God except that revealed in the Bible. Weber suggested that this left them with an “inner loneliness” since they did not know if they were to be saved and there was nothing they could do to earn their salvation.
Asceticism – Abstinence, self-discipline and self-denial. Vocation – Constant, methodical work in an occupation, not a monastery.
