ENIAC

Basic Facts  The Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was first announced on February 14,  It was the first general-purpose electronic computer.  It was constructed and operated at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering.  It was built by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert.  It was a war project from WWll its mathematical calculations needed to produce artillery firing tables for the Army.

Building the ENIAC  Many inventions led to the development of the ENIAC.  The mechanical brains, abacus, slide rule, difference engine, mechanical calculators, differential analyzer, vacuum tubes and punch cards all contributed to ENIAC.  ENIAC was 150 feet wide with 20 banks of flashing lights.  It weighed 40 tons.

 It had 40 panels of plugboards in a U shape.  It had 18, 000 vacuum tubes.  It contained thousands of circuits.  It used 150 kilowatts of electricity.  The internal memory was composed of twenty ten digit accumulators and 6, 000 cables and switches on the function table.  The external memory was supplied by punch cards.
