COURSE DESCRIPTION American literature begins with the Colonial Period and moves through the Rise of Realism, the Civil War, the post war periods, and the 1900s to contemporary writings; units within the time periods are thematically arranged. Attention is given to major literary trends such as Puritanism, Nationalism, Regionalism, Transcendentalism, Imagism, Modernism, and Cultural Inclusion as well as to major American authors and significant historical periods. Literary forms covered include the short story, novel, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Students are given the opportunity to improve grammar and usage skills.

REQUIRED NOVELS The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Native Son by Richard Wright You will need to purchase the following novels! All students must have these three books on the scheduled date. YOU WILL RECEIVE A TEST GRADE OF 100% OR ZERO IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT. Please see me privately if you cannot have all of your books on the due date to avoid a zero.

MAKE-UP WORK POLICY Two days to make-up missed assignments If students are on a field trip and happen to miss class, they are still responsible for the assigned work for that day, meaning all work must still be turned in on the due date. Assignments must be turned in before the student leaves the school for a field trip.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY A student caught in an act of academic dishonesty and/or plagiarism will earn a zero on the assignment. Parent contact will be made and a referral will be sent to the discipline office.

EXTRA CREDIT Extra credit is assigned at the discretion of the teacher. It is intended for those students who have completed every assignment and who would like to improve their average. It is NOT intended as make-up work for those students who do not do their work on a regular basis.
