Registration – Your Next Move for Next Year Presented by Meadowlark Middle School Counseling Department

Before we begin, you will need: A pencil A highlighter Your registration card from your teacher A registration packet

On the outside of your packet, write the following: Your name The name of your homeroom teacher Due Date: NO LATER THAN MARCH 7th!!!

You should place in your envelope: Letter to Parent /Math Course Description Letter describing Algebra1 requirements Registration booklet

Look at the front of your registration card. Use your highlighter to mark your card like the one in the next slide. Before returning your card, please complete all information on the front of the card. Do this at home with your parents. See the next slide.

Now look at the back of your card. Highlight: Student Name Student Number Parent Signature See the next slide.

We will now go through a process of elimination so that you can choose your Encore courses for next year. After eliminating the courses you may NOT take, you and your parents may make your selections from the remaining courses.

Look at the music and art courses, listed in the left row of courses. If you are currently taking Chorus, mark out (eliminate) Beginning Chorus. See the next slide.

If you have never taken Chorus, mark out (eliminate) Continuing Chorus. See the next slide.

IMPORTANT: If you have Band or Orchestra this year and choose to continue, remember that they meet every day and you will need to number your choices for Band or Orchestra as #1 AND #2

Also, if you plan to take Orchestra or Band next year, have your teacher place his initials beside the course you should take.

If you have never been in Orchestra, eliminate both Continuing Orchestra and Advanced Orchestra. See the next slide.

If you have never been in Band, eliminate both Continuing Band and Advanced Band. See the next slide.

Now look at the Art courses. If you have never taken Art, eliminate Advanced Visual Arts. See the next slide.

IMPORTANT If you want to take Advanced Visual Arts next year, Mrs. Miller or Mrs. Dutton must approve by placing their initials beside that course.

Now look at the foreign language courses, in the middle row of courses. Mark out (eliminate) Spanish for Native Speakers. This course is not offered at MMS. See the next slide.

If you are not taking French this year, mark out (eliminate) both Continuing French and French I (High School Credit). See the next slide.

If you are not taking Spanish this year, mark out (eliminate) both Continuing Spanish and Spanish I (High School Credit).

IMPORTANT If you ARE taking Spanish or French this year, and want to take it next year, have your foreign language teacher place their initials by the course you should take. See the next slide.

Now look at the last column, on the right side of your card. If you have taken ONE year of Computer Skills (or Keyboarding) in the sixth or seventh grade, mark out Computer Skills & Applications P1. See the next slide.

If you have taken Computer with Mrs.Guenther or Mrs.Patterson in sixth grade AND seventh grade, mark out (eliminate) Computer Skills & Applications P1 AND P2. See the next slide.

The third year computer skills course is called Exploring Business/ Marketing/Entrepreneurship.

Therefore, even if you have taken both Keyboarding and Business Computer Technology, you have the opportunity to take a third computer skills course. See the next slide.

This course is called Exploring Business/ Marketing/Entrepreneurship. This course is available for ALL eighth grade students. See the next slide.

Now we will continue the process of elimination. If you are currently taking Exploring Life Skills, mark out (eliminate) Exploring Life Skills P1 on your card. Next year, we will offer Exploring Life Skills P2 for students who took Life Skills this year. See the next slide.

If you have not taken Exploring Life Skills, mark out Exploring Life Skills P2. See the next slide.

Next year, a new Technology course is being offered, Technological Systems. This course is available to ALL eighth grade students.

Now you are ready to complete your card. Your Encore course choices should be numbered 1-6 in order of preference with number 1 being your first choice.

Before you return your card, make sure that you: Accurately complete the information on the front of the card. Have your Encore selections numbered 1-6 Have teachers initial where necessary: Foreign Language, Band, Orchestra, Advanced Art HAVE YOUR PARENTS SIGN YOUR CARD!

If you have questions, bring your packet with your registration card and come by the Counseling Center.

Remember- Registration cards are due no later than March 7th!!!
