Social Security Number  The 9-digit number used by the Social Security Administration to keep track of your earnings. It can be used to access bank and credit card accounts as well as other personal information.  DO NOT CARRY YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD I N YOUR WALLET OR PRINTED ON YOUR CHECKS

Ways to prevent Identity Theft 1. Deposit outgoing mail in the post office mailbox 2. Remove mail once it is delivered 3. Keep items with personal information in a safe place like a locked drawer or lock box 4. Safeguard your sensitive information on your computer or online with passwords that include both numbers and letters.

More Ways to prevent Identity Theft 5. Avoid easily guessed passwords. Use letters and numbers 6. Don’t share your passwords or write them down where others can get them 7. Don’t give out personal information over the phone, , mail or web unless you initiated the contact so you know the contact is legitimate

 Before sending sensitive data to a web site be sure it is a secure site. One that begins with or shttp://  Make sure your computer at home has a secure internet connection  SHRED all important items like receipts, credit card statements, credit applications, etc.
