Id-ul-Fitr festival or Eid-ul-Fitr festival, commonly known as Eid is the most important occasion of Islamic calendar. What is Id-ul-Fitr?

Ramadan is said to be the holy month of Muslims, it is believed that holy book Qu’ran was revealed to prophet Muhammad during this month by the angel Jibril. It is believed that during this month the gates of hell are closed and the gates of heaven are open. Why the Celebration?

'Fitr' is derived from the word 'fatar' meaning 'breaking’. The weeks of fasting came to an end. The Prophet Muhammad declared the last day of Ramadan as a day of celebration strengthening the feeling of brotherhood.

The festival begins with the first sighting of the new moon. Muslims in most countries rely on news of an official sighting, rather than looking at the sky themselves. When does the festival begin?

Where Where is the festival celebrated? Id ul Fitr festival is celebrated by Muslim communities all over the world with great devotion and joy. Muslims gather in a Mosque or a large open area to offer special prayers of Eid.

How is the festival celebrated – Customs:

On the morning of the festival, men will cut their hair and nails. Everyone will take a bath and wear brand new clothes. The men will wear white clothes because white symbolizes purity. The women will wear perfume and decorate their hands with henna. Getting Ready!

Every house will be filled with decorations and Eid Mubarak cards will be sent. ! Decorating!

People visit each other's homes and take part in festive meals with special dishes, beverages and desserts. This will be the first meal Muslims will have had in a month. There are special services out of doors, in Mosques, as well as processions through the streets. Partying!

Eid is also a time of forgiveness, and making amends. On this day Muslims distribute all kinds of gifts from, clothes to food or cash to those in need. Thinking of others!

Your task is to design a post card for the festival of Eid. Task:

Imagine that you are on holiday in Egypt, Ramadan has just ended, you are writing to someone back home in Liverpool. Describe in as much detail as you can, the celebrations that you are witnessing on your holiday: Why are they celebrating? How are people dressed? What are they eating? How are they celebrating? Who are they giving presents too and why? Remember to include a special greeting: Ask your teacher for a template for your card!
