2 Health Responsibilities for DSHS Maintaining public health activities, such as immunizations, sanitation and food quality Preventing and treating chronic disease Preventing and treating substance abuse and mental illness Preparing for and responding to public health threats, such as hurricanes, pandemic influenza and bioterrorism Monitoring and controlling infectious diseases Providing community health safety net services. Using health care data to improve services and guide decision-making

4 Agency Facts ~ $2.7 billion per year budget ~ 12,000 FTEs (~7,500 in state hospitals) Nearly 6000 client services and administrative contracts 157 DSHS sites

6 Division Facts 250,000 professionals and facilities licensed, certified, or registered by DSHS per year Each workday: Regulatory Services employees process applications from ~ 500 people and 100 facilities Professional Licensing and Certification Unit, alone, handles about 1,000 incoming phone calls

8 Division Facts WIC serves more than 900,000 clients a month. About 65% of all infants born in Texas are WIC clients during their first year. The DSHS Family Planning Program serves about 230,000 women, adolescents and men each year. Primary Health Care serves about 105,000 clients annually. FQHC Incubator Program 32 FQHCs in FQHCs in 2009

14 Division Facts Laboratory Receives ~ 2 million specimens per year People, animals, mosquitoes, food, water, and consumer products Test for infectious diseases, newborn screening, clinical chemistry, and environmental chemistry Immunization Program Distributes over 12 million doses of vaccine annually through the Texas Vaccines for Children Program (3,400 private and public sites) and offers uninsured adult vaccines through public clinics statewide. New vaccines for adolescents in the past three years have also made this age group a priority as well. HIV FY ~29,000 persons were provided HIV medical and support services FY the HIV medication program provided 200,000 medications to more than 13,000 persons with HIV disease

Of those seeking information, 90% are external customers.
