210/10/2015 Motivation Enable large number of Mobile Internet devices with various applications –Runs simultaneous internet applications –Connected always Emerging Devices: –Smart Phone/Netbook: Social networking (twitter, chat, facebook, etc.), Skype, Browsing, Streaming –Gaming consoles: PSP –Sensors: Traffic sensors, weather sensors, surveillance –eReaders: Kindle and nook for download newspapers, books, blogs etc.

310/10/2015 Problem Statement Goal: Maximize the system capacity for Mobile Internet Applications with “good” user experience and long battery life –E.g., increase number of simultaneous Skype, YouTube, social networking users while maintaining the quality of experience (QoE) Assumptions: –Large number of heterogeneous devices and applications –Dynamic traffic characteristics (variable packet size, inter-arrival time, and arrival rate due to end-2-end congestion control like TCP, multimedia contents, and other network factors) –Time-varying performance requirements due to network environment changing and various application implementations –Lack of common way to quantify user experience for various Mobile Internet applications. MOS for voice, but what for gaming, streaming, social networking –Mapping the user experience to QoS parameters is complex

410/10/2015 Limitation of Today’s Approach QoS guarantee is based on metrics such as throughput, delay, jitter, but it is not straightforward to map these QoS parameters to heterogeneous mobile internet user experience –E.g., Skype packet size and inter-arrival varies over time [1]. No standard way to quantify the QoS parameters of Skype voice. QoS guarantee via over provisioned resources – Costly and wasteful Cost effective solutions are needed for current/future Internet apps Require negotiation and pre-arrangements with third party vendors No QoS mechanisms for best effort (BE) service class

510/10/2015 Conclusions & Recommendation Conclusions: Mobile internet applications have dynamic traffic characteristics and time-varying performance requirements Today’s QoS Mechanisms not scalable for Mobile Internet Applications Recommendations: Develop air-interface hooks to maintain “good” Mobile Internet Application user QoE. The hooks are needed –To exchange application level information for better radio/network resource scheduling –To exchange radio/network level information for better application adaptation Develop deep sleep mechanisms for devices like sensors
